back yard firepit ideas

the wife is bugging me to make a firepit, i have a few ideas but wondering what you guys have done or if you have any input?

i have seen a few nice ones with a washing machine drum as the pit and rock stacked around it, just an idea

i am leaning towards concrete block but prefer a more natural look, i may go with block and cover it in stone veneer

 

I haven't finished mine yet,but I'm basically putting down a layer of sand in my firepit area,then regular brick on top of it,and putting rocks of all size around it in a circle since I have so many rocks on my property. I'm keeping it simple yet effective.

 

Concrete will spall and crack from the heat. Bricks will do the same, but not as easily. Fire bricks(for fireplace lining) would be the best for the hot side of the pit.
Old truck rims work well for small pits.

 

I just dug out a hole in my back yard. But I'm Redneck like that....

then you could add stones to make it look like this

Dug down in a circle, added some sand & used all size rocks collected from my travels around my property and/or out exploring on the backroads w/ the tacoma. They outline the circle.

I found a large metal whiskey barrel at the landfill & use that in the bottom.
It gets used every just about every weekend & sometimes in the winter.
The Christmas tree always goes in the first one of the season

This is my first attempt at uploading an image with the new site, so please forgive if it turns out to be just an attachment or super huge. My wife and I built this fire ring, then a few months later decided to build a patio around it (lots of work, but fun). We used the trapezoid shaped brick, about 100 of them built the ring five courses high. Its about 3 years old now and the bricks have not cracked or spalled.

 

Here is mine, Got the wheel for free at the local tire shop, The rocks were free from the side of the road when we had snow, And the pavers I had to buy
