That new car smell !!!

Anyone out there experiment with any aftermarket scents? Which one smells like that new car smell the closest?

I hope there's one out there that really comes close because what I've been doing is applying different sprays and such to the cabin air filter and reinstalling it. Then when the fan draws air through it the scent comes with it. Works like a charm without being overpowering.

Use your favorite cologne, for example.

What I'd like to do is cut thin strips of leather and fit them between the folds of the filter.

Sound like a good idea?

 

I would avoid putting the strips of leather in your filter. You'll find yourself with much less air flow at the vents. But at least it'll smell nice

 

I've only had the truck for 2 weeks and I was surprised to see how much crap accumulated in the filter in that short time!

Earwigs, knats, flies, feathers, sand,....Jimmy Hoffa Sr., it was amazing!

 

where are the filters located at in the truck? i'll tape a dryer sheet to mine haha, i used to tape them to my ass when i had nasty gas, it always filtered it and made it smell like poopy flowers haha

 

Not to be a smart-ass, but there's this thing called an operators handbook, it has tons of stuff in there about where stuff is and how to get to it. There's even pictures and stuff. LOL

It'll even tell you why your "maintenance required" light comes on at 4,500 miles and then stays on at 5,000.

I know, I know,.....pesky reading and all.

The filter is located under the glovebox in the 2.7's. The directions are in the vicinity of page 235-245 somewhere (I don't have it handy to be sure).

 

i knew about the light lol, i just dont know where my owners manual is so i wanted to cheat

 

1. You have to open your glove box.
2. On the right side you'll see what looks like a black shock absorber.
3. Unhook the shock absorber thingy by pulling it off the nipple attached to the glove box.
4. Grasp the glove box on both sides and (compress the sides inward) and pull the glove box out. It's really easy to do this.
5. Behind the glove box there's a black box with (2) horizontal plastic latches/tabs. Unlatch by pulling down on those tabs.
6. with the door pulled down from the top, you should see a white filter. Pull out directly towards you (carefully).

Replace by doing everything in reverse.

Note: once you've detached that shock thingy it'll be a bitch to get it extended to go back over the nipple you removed it from. The easiest way is to have a thin blade screwdriver or a hook-shaped wire to pull it back down so you can reattach it to the glovebox.

The whole process takes about 3 minutes.

 

I've had my truck for 4 months now and my filter is still real clean.

 

Thanks for that info! !! I wasn't aware that I even had a cabin air filter!! I only have 250 miles on my Taco so I don't have to worry about it yet but I'll check it from time to time

You know, in that same mysterious owners manual Tsunami referred to, it also has a suggested maintenance schedule. On that schedule, it includes a recommendation of how often you should check the cabin filter.

I've got about 7000miles on my Tacoma. Anyone get any weird smells from their HVAC when they turn it on. I've checked the filter for any foreign objects but came up empty.

 

I've had that in every vehicle I've owned. I call it the burrito supreme effect. It varies from week to week, but is fairly consistent in observed reactions of passengers. I really must contact the manufacturers about this defect.

 

Those last two should also work on the burrito supreme effect.

 

Yeah I get this too when I use the A/C. I heard about that fungus thing before...is it dangerous or anything? Like mold spores or something?

 

Sorry I don't know why with 2days technology they cannot duplicate that smell. I think its the majority of all the new plastic,leather,carpet,cloth,etc all rolled into 1

 

about everyone likes that new car smell...its gotta be bad for ya...yea the essence of bad carcinogens

 

I'm definitely in the minority. Hate new car smell, and I can't wait for all that crap to finally outgas in my 08.
