Looking at 2 trucks, a 1st Gen and 2nd Gen... Which one?

I have no idea which forum to post this in, so apologies mods, if this isn't the right one.

Which would you buy?

Both are regular cabs, both 5 speed manual trans, both 4wd. The differences?

First one is a 92 with 82,000 miles, bench seat. Guy is asking 7500 for it. Second one is a 2000, with TRD package, bucket seats, 160,000 miles. 8900 is the asking price on it.

I really, really want the 2000, but I'm scared to death of the frame rust issues. If I understand correctly, this wasn't an issue until AFTER 95, right? Also, the 92 obviously has the 2.4 L 22re, the 2000 has the 2.7 L 3rz.

Lastly, the 92 is local, the 2000 is some 11 hours away. With these few facts, what's you guy's poison, and why?

Where are you from? I would double check the prices on those trucks. I plugged both of them into kbb.com and got around $3,000 for the '92 and between $4,000 - $5,000 for the 2000. But I priced them up in CA.

Unless you live in the rust belt, buy the 2000. Power in the pre tacos is inadequate IMHO.

If you do live in the rust belt, the 92 may be pretty rusty by now as well.

I would go for the newer truck and just be sure the frame is solid and taken care of.

 

If that 92 has been garaged, it would be my choice especially if the undercarriage and engine compartment is nice and clean. Only 82,000 miles is nothing, and if it was well cared for .. all routine maintenance, oil changes performed on time, etc. .. you should see a lot more out of it. Other things to check - What's the compression on the cylinders? How many owners? Do they have maintenance records? Hell that 92 is appealing to me! I miss my old 86.

Not of the 92. The 2000 and a secondary 1999 were both found on Autotrader/Carsdirect/et al.

 

Ahh. Nobody talks about 2nd Gens in the 2nd Gen sub-forum, I take it.

 

That's where I'm leaning. Not from the Rust Belt, southeast GA here. We put our salt on our food, not on the damn road.
