When I set my cruise control, then shift into neutral (like when rolling down a hill for example), the computer will stop applying power (as expected). But then, when I hit resume while still in neutral, the computer will revv up the truck beyond the red line. Kind of scray. Accidentally happend to me, and for a sec or so I had no idea what the heck was going on.
Anybody else had this happen? I can btw repeat this - happens all the time. It's no problem when you are prepared for it and hit cancel quickly on the cruise control. Anybody willing to try it?

Odd... My cruise shuts off if I bump it into neutral or depress the clutch...
I'm wondering why you would hit resume in neutral anyway???

Mine does the same as yours.
The problem happened when I hit resume. It happened by accident, I was cruising down this long hill in neutral, and when the truck started slowing down at the bottom I hit resume but had forgotten that I was in neutral. It sure should not happen, the truck should register that it's in neutral.

Ok... I get what you mean.

One would think the Truck would know when it's not in gear...

Well for one you're not supposed to drive in neutral. In fact it's illegal in every state that I know of. Why not just depress the clutch and hold it in while driving down that long hill, but leave it in gear? Get to the bottom, release clutch, hit resume. Problem solved.

I would love to see a cop try and prove that you were in neutral.

So what if they can or can't. Does that even matter? It's a matter of safety on the road. If you are shifted out of gear, should an emergency situation arise requiring evasive action, you are less ready to respond, and more likely to compound the danger.

I don't buy that. Be aware of your surroundings and know when you can coast.

Since I drive at night with not many people on the road, I do it often... now if I were on a highway or somewhere that I MIGHT need to accelerate quickly.. I wouldn't do it.

Well like I said, if you want to coast, why not just push in and hold the clutch? You're still coasting .. gears still disengaged. But it's a MUCH faster to reengage if all you have to do is let the clutch out as opposed to having to push in, shift back into gear, let out.

Also wears out the clutch I would think. I can reengage quickly anyway if I need to.

And like I said, when driving you should always be aware of your surroundings anyway... during my drive to work I can't think of a single time that I might have needed to quickly accelerate if something went wrong...

I never heard of that, I do it all the time when approaching a red light for example. What you suggested (hold the clutch down while in gear) will slowly over time kill your clutch, not a good idea.

How if there is no sensor telling the computer it is in neutral? :)

EDIT: It doesn't wear the clutch disc out at all since it's totally disengaged. It might place some additional stress on the throwout bearing, but I have never ever had a TOB go out on any of my manuals (Celica, 4Runner, and two Subarus). Then again I never even heard of a problem with any TOBs until the Toyota 6-speeds. Chalk that up to bad engineering.

Besides... believe me, when you're suddenly being chased by a pack of rabid zombie fat chicks, the last thing you want is to be out of gear.

But fat chicks don't move very fast.. so I would have time to throw it back into gear. :)

Yeah but you're coasting downhill. Fat chicks are like lightning on the downhill. ;)

    Also illegal in some states:

"Don’t coast with the gears in neutral (it’s illegal) or with the clutch pedal pushed down except when shifting gears." Tennessee Driver Handbook and Driver License Study Guide page 93

Yeah, and nobody says anything when people tail gate 5' behind me @ 75mph. I don't think that coasting is much of a safety issue, really. I would consider my 2" or so lift to be more dangerous.

I agree I coast down hills in neutral. That is what a brake is for, to stop you from hitting other people.
