11 quarts of oil mistake

Shit happens. That's a risk we take when we DIY.

 

My advice: Look for new oil leaks. Check your oil level daily for a few weeks. Drive with the radio off and listen for strange noises from the engine and/or transmission. If any of those show a sign of trouble (oil leaks/grinding noises) take to a reputable mechanic to further investigate. And I did not say I was all knowing, just no reason for people to be an ass to everyone who post something.

 

Even though I kinda tooled you, you knew many guys would want to give you a hard time for your mistake. I do applaude you for stepping up and looking for advise, which I also offered. I was actually giving the other guy a hard time for suggesting a "stamped pan for idiots" idea. Sorry you were offended but before you do a DIY project I suggest you study the project and know how to go about it prior to starting. I am not a pro mechanic, but like you I have done basic maintenance on all my motors from cars, trucks, boats, lawn equipment, etc. Even though its just an oil change, there are differences with many motors. Sorry, but I still can not understand how anyone can do this. However, as you may know now, there are many here who have done it so I guess you should not feel so bad?...

 

Concerns about overfilling the engine oil have been already brought up - what I have to add is that when you pulled the transmission drain plug you did not drain the transmission dry. There is a lot of fluid that is retained within the transmission itself (valve bodies, passages, etc). If you take a look at the FSM , it implies to me that the total capacity is about 5.3L, with only 1.3L being in the pan that you drained.

Although I don't think it would be wise to drive any significant distance without correct volume, given that you noticed it almost immediately and did the correct thing (pulling over and checking everything) I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you had absolutely no trans fluid, the transmission would not shift (no fluid pressure).

I think other people are correct in suggesting you should keep an eye on it and change the trans. filter (fsm link ) to play it safe.

autozone should start holding diy self classes

 

Buy a Haynes or Chilton manual. They arent as in depth as they used to be (my old 80 Chevy for example) but still worth the $25.00 for the basics. Yes almost everything is availible online but it's still good to keep in the vehicle.

 

If they did that, everyone would be doing what the OP did. Autozone is the worst example of automotive knowledge

In my experience at a Toyota dealership, this would cause more harm than good. Sure, there are some smart guys working at parts stores like Autozone, but a majority of them aren't too sharp.

OP, good for you to fess up to a mistake. A couple guys hit on the fact that you did the right thing in the given situation. These are tough trucks, and I have witnessed people do much worse to them without negative repercussions. However, your transmission fluid is still low. These automatics don't have a dip stick/fill tube like older ones do, so you need to bring it to a Toyota dealership to have it properly serviced (because you need a Toyota scan tool to properly test fluid level, it's a lengthy procedure). Plus, the World Standard fluid for your transmission isn't cheap. If you have it drained and filled, expect it to be about $150. Budget $250 for a complete flush.

As far as everyone ragging on him, piss off. It's his $25k truck to mess up, so if he's willing to take that risk, who are you to judge him?

 

Exactly, anyone that has clue about working on a car knows there will still be fluid in the tranny. It will be fine.

As for the engine, they certainly do not design a wet sump engine to have the crank dipping with each revolution. The engine would probably hold25 quarts before it would even be close to locking a cylinder.

The folks that drive lawnmowers should pay very close attention to not overfilling your engine with oil. Same for those of you that run two strokes, don't panic when you can't find a drain or filler, just don't overfill them either.

The kid made a mistake, he got lucky, but learned. We should all be so lucky when we make our stupid mistakes. Those that make no mistakes are accomplishing nothing.

Thankfully not true where I live. The Napa here has 3 older guys who know their shit. And they have really good prices for some reason. Cheapest Napa around.
