uncle is helping me with my truck..

Sooooo I have decided to stop waiting for my mom and let her keep her money and went to my uncle for help with a truck...so without her money I will have to get a pretacoma but I am fine with that my limit is about 5 grandm now..and I am looking at some trucks on craigslist...I founda couple and this one looks to be a good deal? Not really sure..just looking and stuff..

Rough life.... I paid for my '94 4Runner, '90 Pathfinder, '94 Pathfinder and 2011 Tacoma by myself. Be thankful you're getting help on this.

 

Its hard to find a job at only 18 in so-cal. Ive applied too a few warehouses the past week and each had about 130-160 apps.. so yes I am grateful they are helping...my grandma and my uncle have been trying to get my mom to help but she hasn't given no effort whatso ever..

I am just so excited and stuff about it I don't want to get something that will turn to rubbish after a week :s you know?

Understandable.

It's a Toyota. Probably the only limiting factor of it, offroad, is the independent front suspension. Though, that depends on what sort of "offroading" you want to do with it.

 

I want to do a little bit of everything, you know? Probably long travel will be one of the main things...

 

I read an earlier ad that he posted..he said it had an automatic locker? Do those come standard on these 4x4's?

If you're wanting a prerunner/longtravel, then look for a 2wd and lock the ass end. No point getting a 4x4 if you're wanting a prerunner, IMO.

 

Well I was thinking a 4x4 because my friend sometimes goes mudding in Nevada and she said she would invite me sometime and stuff
Now I am having several thoughts if maybe a locked 2wd would be suffice for that kind of stuff as well?

 

I cant believe you asked how well these are offroad....... you made 250+ post on TW and you havent noticed that guys wheel their trucks offroad in rocks, mud, snow, anything and everything.

How much you plan on doing any wheeling, not counting dirt fire roads. Got rock and hill climbs in mind then go 4wd if not the 2wd will be fine. Its more driving skill, locked in the rear will help, going mudding throw on mud tires like swampers and widddddeeee then your good to go.

 

Many will argue the wide vs. narrow thing. Personally I like a narrow tire.

But yeah, whatchu said lol.

 

OP, it will be a pretty decent off roader. those are the toyota trucks lots of guys make their mud boggers and hunting trucks out of. don't do that though. that looks like a truck a knowledgeable person has owned and maintained. bring somebody that really knows their shit and/or take it to a mechanic before you buy it. it's a really sharp truck, good luck.

 

Ask them if it comes with the Wrigley gum wrapper.

OP, that is an excellent truck! I had a 93 single cab 4x4 with the 22re engine in it. The motor outlasted the body. It went anywhere I pointed it. The biggest thing with that truck is you want to REALLY look for rust. That particular generation for those are notorious for rusting out. I had to sell mine because I need more room but if you looked behind the bench seat right behind the driver, you could see the road. The bed also started rusting out as well... Most notorious spot there is driver side right behind the wheel.


Looking at the pics, that truck looks pretty damn clean though. The road salt around here in the winter did not help with rust. Looks like he may have had a new paint job done on it as well.


I would jump all over that in a heart beat. DO NOT take it mudding though. That will quickly destroy that beautiful truck.

 

Maybe your mom doesn't think you are "ready" to have a vehicle. You mentioned looking for a job "the past week"... so what have you been doing the last several MONTHS to get a job to EARN your own money? Who's going to pay the gas and insurance?

It's good that grandma and uncle are willing to help, but there are more costs involved in owning a vehicle than just buying it especially if you want to off road it.

Maybe if you had a job and were saving your $$ instead of spending it, mom would come around a lot faster than you think. Keep looking and get one, even if it's McDonalds. You can keep looking when you aren't working. Show mom that you are grown up and not a kid with his hand out saying "I want" and throwing a tantrum when you don't get your own way.

 

Ive been looking for a long while. 6+ months. My aunt who is hr at city of covina is going to help me fix up my resume.im going to school, got a small part time job at the school moving computers and stuff...so yeah....oh I already have a grand.

 

Yeah I plan to do some rock climbing and hills and stuff.

Guessing these trucks are good for that then huh lol

 

so the truck looks great and all that but one thing that i would consider is that the 3.0 v6 had alot of issues with blown headgaskets and stuff.. its just a design flaw from what i understand.. im not saying all 3.0s suck but you might want to look into it.

the 22r and 22re were proven engines and ran like a champ i had an 86 with a 22re and i beat it up and it still went where i wanted it to go and it was the IFS i do wish it was a solid axle though. if you happen to find a pretaco with a solid axle and everything is straight no rust runs good and all that i would go with that option

also you might get lucky like me and possibly find a good salvaged truck like the one i picked up after i rolled my truck i got it for 5300 and there are no issues with it that i can tell.. it definitely isnt anything like my previous truck but i only bought it for the body.
