Last year I took the truck to Toyota to have my PA state inspection done (every year in PA). They would not pass my truck because of the fog light mod, stating that the fogs must turn off when the high beams are turned on.
Also, during the same inspection, they would not pass it because of the tint strip across the windshield being too low. They said it was below the "A" line on the top left of the windshield. I had to go back to the tint shop and have it re-done.

Now, this year, I took it yesterday to a local shop. They called me and said that they would not pass it because of my Spidertrax spacers being too wide. They told me that state law says .25 inches is as wide as you can go. I called the shop that put them on and told them the issue. He told me to bring the truck by tommorrowto get a sticker on because he said the truck was clean.

What issues have you had while getting the taco inspected? I feel this may turn in to a good thread to refrence before performing questionable mods to the truck.

Post the state you're in and the mod that would not pass, or they gave you a hard time about.

CA- has smog right? so mods to exhaust may cause interference.

to OP I have family in PA and there inspection is pretty strict even though for all that you pay they dont reward you PAers with very good roads

They're strict, but not consistent which pisses me off. The place I took it to the other day passed my foglight mod, but Toyota didn't

My 2011 has a sticker from the dealer but my old "97" type 1 never in it's 248,000 miles did not pass inspection even though it had 100 watt "E" spec head lights and Hella fog lights that worked with parking lights up to high beam. Maine has yearly inspection and they do check for rust, tires, breaks, exhaust, glass etc. but only one county does an emission test.

My Tacoma is nearly new... regarding other vehicles I've had inspected, as long as you go to the right shop in San Antonio, anything passes. My wife had her SUV rejected once for a stupid worn out rear windshield wiper.

BC, Canada. Done. I could lift my tacoma 10" and throw a 350 in it, straight pipes, and no one would care...

Though, as I understand.. there is smog testing on the coast...

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
My 98 once failed for bad shocks (PA) and every year after that, the frame cancer.

and you also cant have a chip or programer when you get smog done. however to my understanding any changes to exhaust will cause you to fail your test, however ive had cat backs on all of my trucks and it has never been a problem

Not true, BC has very strict motor vehicle rules, just wait until a LEO tickets you and makes you get a provincial inspection.
    Not good...

Aslong as none of the cats are removed you should not fail in CA. I was there for 7 years and never failed with cat back exhausts.

Anyone in CA know if removing the charcoal filter affects smog inspection?

A friend of mine owns a muffler shop that does state inspections, so I could do anything I want to my Taco and it would pass. Before they always got me on window tint being too dark but my truck now is actually legal. Texas

Your friend needs to be careful. My bro-in-law owned an inspection shop in NY and was handing out inspection stickers like candy on Halloween. He got caught, was fined a shitload of money, and can't do inspections anymore.

Glad I'm out in the middle of nowhere (heading east from where I live the closest gas station is 100 miles away.) No inspection bullshit here. Is it mainly a requirerment in or near big cities?

There was a shop in town here that does smog inspections that got nailed by the state smog people. One of their techs had his buddies truck hooked up to the smog analyzer and had an active smog test in progress. His buddy was in the cab of the truck with a laptop computer hooked up and was adjusting his tuning as needed to keep the truck within emission limits at the tailpipe. The state inspector, or whatever his title was, just happened to walk in at that moment to check on the shop. Bad news all around!

After purchasing my 2001 out of province, it required a provincial inspection

Failed due to leaking rear axle seals, no daytime running lights.
