My 02 tacoma squeals on ignition.

My 02 Tacoma squeals on a cold ignition, and doesn't on a warm ignition. This squealing lasts roughly 2-5 seconds.
If i turn the wheel during the squealing it get's worse, the truck has 90,000 miles on it, i'm wondering what would cause this? I suspect it's the tension on the power steering pump, however it's the most fucked belt system i have even seen and cannot find the adjusting bolt for it, anyone know where that is? Or anyone have similar problems?

 

There is a good chance you have a belt slipping. Check them with your hand when the engine is cold. They should not have slack in them. Im not sure where the adjustment is but if you look good enough you should be able to find it. I just got my Tacoma, but I noticed the adjuster for at least one of my belts was down low on the bottom pulley.

Chances are you need to replace your drive belts, don't overtighten them or you will kill a bearing or accessory. You might also look into if you need a timing belt since at your mileage it's due for that soon too.

 

Also check your power steering fluid level, and the condition of your fluid. If the fluid is low or in bad condition, the power steering pump might bind and cause the squeeling as well. But most likely it is the tension on the belt. Tighten the belt or belts, and go buy new ones and put them in your truck til you replace them. That way if they break before you get a chance to replace them, at least you won't be stranded.

 

Your water pump bearing might be going bad and causing that I just had to replace mine

Also I redid my belts about 1000 miles ago. How do i know if they are too tight? I have between an inch-1/2inch of play in the belt when I shake it.

 

I already changed the timing belt at 90k, but those diagrams helped alot, i'm use to working on american cars with auto-tensioners. The fluid is a good amber color. I think it's the belts after listening to you thanks!
