Door Kicking is fun when you're young, but it "WILL" wear on your body "No" matter how tough you are! Mentality and motivation will get you thru it, if thats want you really want to do.
It can very boring work regardless of what people are telling you, most of the time you are sitting around waiting for the people in charge to make a decision, or you are rehersing Battle Drills, SOPs, or prepping for the next mission and numerous meaningless tasks.

Gunfights will get your blood pumping, and some guys get hooked on the Rush of Contact, usually Gunfights are short spurts of action.

Everyone talks shit about, "Can't wait til I get to Hammer a bad guy!" That is until it happens, some guys get a taste for it, it bothers some for a time and others dream it nightly and can't get past it.

Then there's the loss of friends who have become your brothers, that effects everyone regardless of who you are!

As for the Airborne/ Air Assualt thing, Gravitity is an unforgiving BITCH! With Airborne you are falling from the sky riding a nylon piece of equiptment made by the lowest bidder at a rate of 18-22 feet per second that you are driving. Jumping hardest on the body primality knees, ankes, hips and lower back.

Air Assualt the aircraft is still made by the lowest bidder, only there is someone else driving the bird. It is a much bigger target thats so loud it wakes the dead and you are hoping that the Mechanic, Crew Chief and Pilot all got lots of sleep, take pride in their work and is as dedicated to the mission as you are.

Regardless of ABN or AAS, the walking seems absolutely endless, slow and mind numbing. Then there's the Rucksack on your back, which seems to hold endless amounts of chow, water, batteries, ammo. When it's full then you'll hang all sorts of shit around your neck or carry in your spare hand.

The 101st is Airborne in name only, lineage going back to WW2,
Actual Ariborne units in no particular order are: the 82nd Abn Div, 173rd ABCT, 4-25 ABCT, afew separate battalions(jump school, training centers, guard and reserve) and all of SOCOM. PM me if your interested in specifics.

Personally, I WOULD NOT MISS IT FOR THE WORLD!

PS. I would'nt give up on the Airforce, they have some of the FINEST Warriors America has to offer. Check out CCT, FAC, TACP and the GREEN FEET boys of Para Rescue! Don't know anything about AF SERE.
    Hope this helps.

Being a machine gunner or a mortar crew member or a grunt may sound like fun now, but just pick up the telephone book where you live and see if you can find any of those jobs listed.

I put in 21 years, 10 months and 9 days........11 years enlisted and then "Mustanged" up through OCS and obtained my commission. Retired as an O-3 (Captain, US Army).

My suggestion to those of you thinking about the military, or even to those of you currently serving is to get into a job specialty that translates to something in the civilian world.

I counseled a high school senior who went into the USAF into a weather billit........she now works for the US weather service at a major airport.

I also have "pushed" several young adults into the Army Aviation program.....getting them a pilot's license and a commission (warrant) as a Warrant Officer and they now fly Blackhawk, Chinook or Apache helicopters.....they can take that training into the civilian world as a pilot for the BLM, Forest Service, US Customs, DEA FBI, police/sheriff agencies, fire departments, TV stations or hospitals......also stay current with your skills in the National Guard and Reserves.....it all counts for 20.......

    Just my .02 cents worth.

I could ALMOST bank in with you guys who say pick something you can apply to the real world, heck, the Air Force is perty much my fall back plan. Yes, being a mortar section leader/sqd ldr have minimal applications in civilian life, yes serious hip, shoulder and hand injuries slow you down big time.. yes bad memories from deployments and brothers lost mess with your mind, but there is no bond or experience like that of an infantry marine.. and i really sincerely thank Every member of Every MOS in Every branch for doing your part! I just connect with the men who have shared my hardships in a way only they can understand.

even if most grunts are obnoxious d bags :D 31s, you know you are!

My rate is electrician. I see you are in the USMC, I really wanted to be in the USMC... But it was super hard to get in, and the wait to go to recruit training was gonna be a while with no promise with an MOS, OC into recruit training.

Its an entirely different experience. Ppl get kinda butt hurt if anyone states facts but being a marine is more challenging and being infantry is a different ball game entirely. Now, that being said, absolutely no one who has served should by any means hand their head. Im proud of them all. What i will tell you of what you may "miss" in the corp is a lot of loyalty and pride in your accomplishments BUT... keep in mind, a good chunk of marines comradery comes alley from all of the epic bullshit we've endured haha and im Talkin worthless d bag in charge makin you do something stupid Again. Also, i have a bad hip, knee, shoulders, hands, back and scaring on my face and insomnia haha AND i have no job skills that carry over from the infantry.

So, i really sincerely would advise anyone who is contemplating joining to pick a good MOS that applies to the real world (electrician!) And my next recommendation if they want to have it good and easy and have the nicest bases and chow halls and barracks would be JOIN THE AIR FORCE! haha so you've made a good choice, good luck,

And thank you for stepping up to help you country in a time when so many have only their lazy, corrupt selves in mind. That's something you should always take pride in.

Too bad you can't pick two...I just joined the Army Reserve. I'll keep the USMC one up though, that was my first branch.

Fellow grunt here (0311) and agree with you 100%.

USMC infantry is like a seperate branch itself, the things we go through and the way we get treated is a lot different than regular Marine Corps (POG MOS). The shit a grunt does completely sucks ass, both mentally and physically but at the end of each day, we are proud to do it anyway. If you're a boot or a Jr. LCPL/E-3, stand by for some "good training." I've had my share when I was a boot. :D

Most grunt Marines, including myself, want to become cops so having an infantry background is a big plus but injury from grunt work may fuck you over.

x2 on the d'bag NCOs telling you what to do. It's even worse if they are friends with the Plt Sgt and other squad leaders. Favoritism is a big, big bitch! My asshole is still sore from being constantly fucked in the ass.

    Semper fi bro. Rah!
