Need help with possible broken clutch fan (never turns off)

I realized that my clutch fan never disengages. It is always on. I dont think I can ever remember a time when it hasnt been on.

Are there any temp switches or possible easy fixes to look for that could be the cause of this? Or is it likely that it is the fluid/spring inside the clutch assembly?

Any tips would be great. This may be a reason to go electric

 

Someone has to have some pointers here

 

Replace is the only fix.

 

Isn't the clutch centrifugal?

I'm taking a shot in the dark because I have never really looked at my specific fan but I don't believe it should disengage or stop untill the engine stops....it works on centrifugal force. I think you should be worried if your fan doesn't engage on an engine start.

 

yeah, it's supposed to always spin.

 

More likely it is thermostatically controlled.

x2 (if it is stuck , it means fluid had leaked out and you had lock up the clutches inside)

Otherwise there would be a way to fix it by replacing fluid with fresh one which is $5 repair. Fluid can be bought from Hobby store.

 

With engine cold and stopped can you rotate fan by hand?

 

There is liquid inside? That is my lesson for today...I have been working on cars for almost 10 years now and never knew that!!

 

Can you turn the fan by hand while the engine is off? If so there is nothing wrong, the fan is supposed to spin all the time, as the engine warms up it spins faster.

 

Mine spins all the time when I'm looking under the hood. Once the idle slows down in the morning it doesn't speed up with the engine. Otherwise you would hear it.

 

Yep. There is gear oil (one used in RC car transmissions) there are also cluthpacks. When engine is cold fan should give almost no resistance but when engine warms up clutchpacks lock it and fan spins fast with the engine RPMS. Transition is smooth because whole process is tight u p to temp of air coming from radiator.
Reason for design is to have non intrusive temp control and if you plow car into the water, fan cools instantly and allows for engine to run with out breaking the fan apart.
Different fans have different density of oil in the clutchpacks. Pink ones should be tow package with highest weight oil to provide more air flow.
Speed of the fan (more or less of cooling) can be changed by replacing fluid with different weight one. So non pink Clutch pack can work as pink if you put correct weight of fluid.

Edit so for those of you who off road in Hot climate it would be beneficial to replace fluid with higher weight to get extra cooling at lower RPMS.

 

Mine is pink with no tow package, is there some standard to this?

Yes it spins freely without the motor on. But, I have never seen a day when this thing is still. So you are saying this is normal?

I have the Pink connector also. There is no temp control switch or anything?

 

I have only see electric one's cut off and on. Every car I have had with a mechanical/clutch fan spin the entire time the vehicle is running.

 

If the engine is running the fan should be as well. The only fans that don't run 100% of the time when the engine is running are electrics.
