...on my last tank of gas! I had been running my Duratracs at 34 psi and had consistantly been getting 15.5 mpg, so I aired them up to 42 psi to see if it would buy me a mpg or two.......and got 20 mpg! :D

First time I've gotten over 17 mpg in over a year. I'm hoping 42 psi won't wear the tires too bad in the middle of the tread.

do the chalk test on the tires and you will see how bad it might be wearing on the tires

At some point there is a trade off between the cost of accelerated tire wear (ie, having to buy new tires sooner) and the cost of fuel saved, especially with current fuel prices. I'd be willing to put up with a little bit of accelerated tire wear if it means a lot of fuel would be saved.

yeah because it should catch the track of the tire but if its windy it wont work so well the chalk will stay on the tire and rub of where it contacts

I noticed that over inflating the tires made a noticeable difference too. But now I have 4 BFG's with goofy wear patterns that will need to be replaced prematurely, more than erasing any fuel cost savings.

    A. what's the max PSI inflation on the sidewall of those tires?
    B. sorry to be negative but better to strike a nice balance between increased air pressure for better mileage, and footprint to the road for safety and stopping power.

Make sure all that tread is firmly on the ground.

This, along with the increased tire wear....Run the propper PSI in the tires, and adjust your driving style.

what would a goodyear proper be? tires do not have a recommended tire pressure on the sidewall of the tire so where would you get a recommendation from a goodyear tire?

so has the OP done the chalk line test to see what the footprint of the over inflated tire looks like?

I run the Destination A/T's on my wife's Ford Escape Hybrid at around 40psi. Gets her about 2 more mpg and they seem to be wearing evenly.

Sorry, Toyota recommended or Goodyear Max. And if you up-size your tires whats the new recommended pressure?

the same as before. increase tire size makes no difference because the pressure (PSI) inside the tire is still the same due to it being a pressure not volume measurement.
