moving a firearm in CA

    I own a regular cab tacoma and I live in CA. I was wondering how I would be able to transport my handguns and my AR to the range and camping? I have no intentions of doing anything shady or illegal, I just want to know how to do this without potentially ruining my day.

    All input is appreciated.

    You have read some laws in regards to the AR? There are a bit of laws I learned about when I first moved to Cali 10+ years ago....I guess I never follow them anymore...I don't even know what they are anymore.

    The gun needs to be unloaded, in it's own locked case. The magazines and ammo need to be in their own case, ideally locked.

    That's it.

    And when camping try not to shoot targets on live trees....tree huggers and forest department have a fit about that...we got in trouble for sticking a knife in a live tree...lol

    behind the seat in a locked case with empty mags and ammo in a separate container. California is an open carry state so the handguns you can have in a holster on you as long as its not loaded, but its best for it to be in a case as well to avoid being harassed.

    Last I lived in Cali was years ago...but then it was gun, unloaded and locked in one case. Ammo, in locked case seperate from gun. If at all in doubt I disassemble my weapons and lock case 'em and keep ammo seperate. That covers it for a National Park, and I think just about anywhere in the US.

    What is that about National Parks?? Pretty sure you can carry in accordance with the local state laws into National Parks (like my valid CCW allows me to carry here in LA national parks) except for into most of the buildings on the properties.

    NEGATIVE...all National Parks require announcing the weapon at the entrance, disassembling, and putting in a locked box for transport through. If you can't comply they are happy to hold for you...but I'd rather just do it all myself.....OOOPS, SCRATCH ALL THAT.

    Only handguns have to be in locked case (and unloaded). Ammo can be anywhere else other than the locked case of the firearm. Long guns can be anywhere and are not required to be locked. You can have your AR (or any long gun) hanging from a gunrack if you wanted. I wouldn't advise it, but no law broken by doing so as long as it is unloaded. Again, ammo can be anywhere except loaded in the firearm. It's even legal to have shotgun shell in the sidesadle as that is still unloaded. Again, not recommended, but supreme court upheald that it's legal.

    If you chose to open carry in your vehicle, you are asking for trouble as no matter what LEO could claim it was concealed when approaching the vehicle.

    Open carry perfectly legal in NATIONAL parks except for designated areas which are required to have posted signs as this is a Federal law. No need to delcare as you enter the park. CA state parks, very illegal.

    Ammo doesn't need to be in it's own locked case (you can buy and carry ammo home from walmart), it just has to be seperate from the gun. I have a case that has two side pockets for handguns (which are individually locked) and a center pocket for the ammo. Calguns.net is a good source. I keep the magazines empty.

    Just some additional info, in terms of open carry, I think a loaded magazine is considered a loaded weapon even if the magazine is detached from the gun (considered part of the gun). I think speedloaders for revolvers are not considered part of the gun therefore you can carry speedloaders with bullets in them. I'm not 100% sure about that though.

    A definite no-no is carrying the weapon in the glove box or the center console. The law specifically forbids it and doesn't make an exception for it being in a locked case.

    Not entirely true. You can open carry and have a loaded mag in a mag holster or pocket. Perfectly legal. If you do this its recommended to have an empty mag in the handgun though to "complete" the firearm while you open carry. Also keeps dirt and shit out.

    Yep! Better off in a locked case in the passenger seat.
