    so about 8 miles in the desert with some buddys my third meber decides to take a shit and reverse was my only gear untill it shaved some more gears down for drive. i had 4.10 stock tacoma gears in there but when somthing breaks its a sign to me it needs to be bigger and better:cool: so im have 4.88 put back in but anyways heres the damage ill post pics after the rebuilt is done repair 040.jpg

    FWIW 4.88 gears are actually the same strength maybe weaker than 4.10s since the teeth need to be thinner for the extra teeth. 4.56 thick are stronger though

    Roland is correct on this this. 4.88 are weaker because the teeth are thinner. Even though there are more teeth, the thickness of the teeth is a big difference compare to stock.

    I went through eastcoastgearsupply.com and got nitro gears. They gave me a 5 year warranty on a built third member.

    i do mind......no im just playin 650 for everything seals rebuild and all but i dropped it my self if he had to do it im sure it would have been a few hundred more

    ya but i was told with the 33s i shout run 4.88's he said no matter what gears i have ill do the same thing but who knows he gave me a warranty so well test them out im just sick of the lag from the larger tires

    the OP is a prerunner so he doesn't have a front diff. If you are a 4x4 you got to change both.

    What kind of pre existing noises were coming from your rear diff before it grenaded on you ?

    Mine is getting ready to take a shit , pinion bearing is howling, whining like hell (although I've seen diffs make this noise for years without exploding)

    Since I gotta pull out the third anyway to change bearing, prolly let a reg. shop do it so's they set the pre load on pinion & all that touchy shit...
