A friend and I were having a discussion on how things have changed since we were kids, and the topic of spanking came up. We reached the conclusion that spanking never really was "BAD" and that we may have learned something from it.

That said, What are your opinions?

*I would like to state that there is a BIG difference between a disciplinary open handed spank or two and beating, which I think is wrong 100% of the time.

As an everyday/regular tool- Not really helpful. But to make an occasion, serious point- It can be an effective tool imho.

And I'm with you-More than a swat or two is probably too far.

I think the line between spanking and a beating has grown very wide, and crossing that line seems to happen so fast.

Kids need a little spanking now and then, if it is used correctly and in moderation.

I do not believe in spanking and I choose not to do it. There are people who grew up being spanked that have become wonderful successful people, and people who grew up being spanked who still grew into "monsters" and criminals. Just as there are people who were never spanked and grew into wonderful people and vice versa. What it all comes down to is each parent making the decision to do what is right for their own family, whether spanking or other forms of discipline

Being a new father, I told my self no spanking and that we would resort to time out. Yea...try telling a screaming 15 month old toddler to stand in the corner for "time out". Needless to say we changed our method. When he started throwing tantrums and screaming we tried talking, soothing him by saying "its okay" and all the other "non-spanking" methods but it was like he was in a trance. We ended up giving him a light spank on the pamper just to try and distract him from his fit. So yea, I agree...sometimes a spanking can be a good disciplinary action but should not be the only.

i think spanking is a great tool. i have been spanked a few times, but after i got spanked hard enough when i was younger i never did that again.

like when little kids run around restraunts? and their parents keep saying stop and they act like they cant hear them? oh my god. my mom would have took me to the bathroom, spanked me. and i wouldnt have done it again lol

considering that all the kids i see at the malls are undiciplined disrespectful bratty little bitches and confused boys wearing girls pants spanking should be more enforced.. except parents i see are all hippies or some shit and dont do anything to dicpline their kids and it drives me crazy

i constantly see parents let their kids get away with whatever they want and kids tend to rule their parents these days it seems..

a young lady at work said she would not spank her child. She said when they were at the store and her child pitched a fit she would take him home. The next time he did the samething she would take him home again. He now knows if he does not like something just pitch a fit and mom will take him home. When my children would pitch a fit in the store we would go into the dressing room and get a spanking . The next time we went to the store and the fit started all you had to do was point to the dressing room...............sweet kids. No I did not beat my childern but I also did what I said I would do and they knew if we said we would do it we did. Don't said you are going to do something and not do it. They will push it evertime, kids are smart.

Used in moderation, I think it's just fine. Words only go so far when you're dealing with little kids, sometimes a swat to get their attention and get them thinking can do wonders for their behavior.

Agreed. Sometimes there's no other way to snap a kid out of their trance. And you have to demand respect sometimes. A child isn't handing it out.

My GF's niece is a smart almost-2 year old and she is a brat when she doesn't want to do something. Her mom is very good about not making a scene but also making sure the toddler isn't ruling the house.

Spanking is a double edged sword... I use it on my kids, but I give them words to understand why their getting it. What they did that caused it (usually something extremely safety related i.e. youre getting this for trying to push your sister down the stairs because you could seriously hurt her) Its more of a warm reminder to help get the message to stick in their heads. Spanking your kids for just any old reason kills the point of the spanking and often becomes beating and thats not cool.

^^^ this. my mom or dad (usually dad) always explained why (i already knew, of course) before. it was never a beating, just enough to get my attention.

as a kid, i couldn't think of anything worse than having to wait in the bathroom until dad got home. i was always testing the limits, so i spent many afternoons in there lol!
