Tires feel "loose" when going over bumps

Just upgraded from stock 225/75/15 to 31-10.50-15 on my 98 4x4 non TRD.Wondering if the SR5 or TRD had some kind of steering dampner mine doesn't have.Doesn't seem to like the extra tire when going over bumps.
Anyone else have this problem?

 

Well first off 31"x10.50x15" is stock tire size for 6 lug 4x's & pre runners

rack & pinion so no steering dampners per say. maybe your due for some new struts & check all for tightness..

 

do yuo feel some chatter in the steering wheel? you might want to look into new steering rack bushings as well

 

Yeah...Go thru and check torque on all the bolts and stuff. Look for play in steering components. How much balance weight did they use on the tires?

 

Are you saying the "looseness" wasnt present with your previous tires? This may sound stupid but check your lug nuts, assuming you didnt do that yet. 2nd.... and im very curious as to why there arent many more complaints / reviews / mods with this...... i know its somewhat labor intensive and time consuming but i would imagine everyone experiences this and is not happy with it....

also jack up the front end and grab the top and bottom of your wheel and see if theres any play in it just incase your wheel bearings are going out

 

No chatter or clunking sounds.Just doesn't seem to take the bumps as well.Truck has very low miles and ball joints are in good shape.Didn't really notice this until I put the 31s on it.Drives flawless on smooth highways at 80mph but certain bumpy roads at 35 mph feels like tires are shaking or bouncing for lack of better words.

 

sounds like a suspension issue.. how old are you shocks?

replace them and if your springs are sagging replace those too

 

Yeah, I'd say your about due in that area. Tire pressure correct?

 

Yeah... low miles or not. They're done.

My stock front end (03) felt loose/was down right dangerous with 100k miles on it. Went to 881's/5100's and couldn't be happier.

I'll give it a shot.Seems like bilstein 5100 are the most popular shock.

 

They were designed for the stock coils, so it is a good place to start. You could also just get the Bilstein HDs that came on TRDs if you aren't interested in lifting/leveling the front end (which is what 5100s do) and want to save some ducats.

 

i have the same problem, just installed slightly larger tires on mine at 106,000 miles. After checking out all the joints to make sure alll are good and tight, and then having someone drive by me while going over a bump i determined the right front strut is making the noise. my 5100s just came in the mail today and i will be installing them tomorrow. i will let you know how it goes.

 

What's the tire load range? And psi in them? On my BFg km if I run them at 35 psi it rides rough and bouncy. I have them at 27 psi, they ride alot better.

 

Putting on new front strut/springs and rear shocks as well today.Will check tire pressure too.Thanks for all the advise

Fixed.Rides much better now.Feels nice and tight when going over bumps now and feels more firm when turning.
