My Canoe is 15.5 too. I'm looking at getting on of the extend-a-truck things but was having a hard time finding them in Canada for a decent price (Amazon.com has them cheap but I couldn't find them on Amazon.ca).

Just fold up your tonneau and put the canoe in the box upside down, right in the center with the tailgate up, two ratchet straps forming an X over the top (from sliding D rings in the front corners to bed mounted tie down points in the rear. One more strap from the back seat of the canoe (which should be pointing down at the road) to trailer hitch will keep it from shifting backwards.

Works great, I've gone from Halifax to Keji at 120-130km/h without any issues. Like mentioned before put a red or orange rag on the end sticking out (I strap a life jacket to mine), but with it proped up over the tailgate you won't have to worry about it hitting much.

I want to find an extend a truck for longer camping trips this summer so I can still leave my tonneau down while driving to keep my gear dry if it rains.

before i got my rack i would just put it on the roof with either towels or inner tubes cut in half to protect the roof.

these are both 17' canoes so if it will work in a shortbed, a 15' shouldn't be a problem..

Thats for the advice. We will be trying that this weekend. You dont happen to have a red devil symbol on the front of your truck do you? Might have seen you the other day if so

    No that wasn't me.

Where are you taking the canoe? Keji is really nice but a bit far out of the way for a day trip.

Be aware that even using a towel or the foam blocks on top of the cab things are likely to move around some in the wind and mark up or scratch the top no matter how well you tie it down. That's why I didn't go that way with my canoe.

I've used these on a ford aerostar before, worked like a charm.

edit: Then again the van had a long roof and I was able to spread the supports out... might be better off with the extendatruck

I use the extendatruck as noted, and don't have to remove my Extang Trifecta, just fold it forward and then tuck the canoe under the front third. It seems plenty stable. I haven't tried the upright option of the extendatruck yet, but will when I am going camping and need more storage in the bed.
