Opinions on spanking?

I've had a chance to operationalize my views on spanking...19 and 16 year-old boys...both turned out better than I deserved....Don't tell DSully72 I said that though...it'll make his head swell....

 

Good point. There has to be an association between act and consequence.

 

Looking at the poll, I think 1 person has been traumatized from their spankings.

 

i think its up to the parents if they want to be spineless shits and let their children run their lives, but when that little shit gets off the bus and gives me some lip he will wish he had a little more discipline

 

When i was a kid, and broke the rules, i was sent outside to choose a switch (a small limber tree branch). The more flexability, the more it hurts. But, if i didn't come back with a good enough one, then dad picked one, and he always picked the best one lol.

I was an absolute hellion when i was young, and my parents spent a lot of time trying to keep me in line.

As for my kids, i don't use this method. But in no way will i hesitate to spank their butts when they get out of line.

 

Bottom line - If they don't fear the time - they'll commit the crime...works the same way with kids and adults....it's why gold jewelry hangs out in the open in the middle-eastern soukes (markets)...Very few people shoplift...the ones that do have to change their name to "Lefty"....

 

You missed an option.

I was beaten and think that is wrong; but I think corrective discipline, which includes a 'way' of spanking may be acceptable for kids who respond appropriately to it.

If the consequence you impose does not lead to the desired results, then we as parents must consider alternatives.

 

Spanking is an effective tool of behavior enforcement, when talking,reasoning,ignoring fail , a good pop in the ass is whats needed sometimes more as an attention getter (theirs, not yours) & to teach that there are reprocusions for not listening or pushing your buttons & mis behaving

But yeah while growing up, you bet I got my ass beat a couple times & looking back deserved everyone I got, the teachers or principle could discipline with a quick phone call to parents explaining why little Johnny is getting ready to get tuned up, if a parent didn't consent to it, they had to leave work & pick child up & wasn't allowed to return to school till the issue was resolved, none of this is an option anymore...

 

i got the shit beat out me lol....but really i got spanked on the regular and i WILL do it to my kids if they need it.

Pretty sure all this no child hitting started with my generation (born in the 80s) and i'm not liking the results i've seen from my peers. Most walk around in a good need of an ass beating (adult spanking). I feel it can be traced back to time outs and explanations of why you're bad vs being spanked. Pain = lessons learned.

I dont agree with people just beating the shit outa their kids, it makes me want to beat the shit out of them.

My Dad used to beat the crap out of my oldest brother but never spanked my other brother or myself. It seemed to have very little effect on him but all of us turned out alright. Well, at least we are not criminals yukedy, yuk!

 

Spare the rod, spoil the child.

 

Discipline has to be scalable. If the child responds to talking to him that's great. If he doesn't respond to talk then something like time out should be tried (problem is that most people make the time out too long for young children). Ultimately the child has to be disciplined so if you finally get to spanking that's what you have to do. In my experience the child will stop before getting to the spanking after they have experienced that a few times.

I never believed my father telling me, "This hurts me more than it does you" until the first time I had to spank one of my children. After doing it I had to leave the room so he wouldn't see me crying.

 

Not to thread jack but any thoughts on the old "wash your mouth out with soap."

This is effective as hell too & no I'm not talking about sitting on their chest & force feeding a bar of soap, just enough to givem' a taste. While growing up I had a bit of a potty mouth & had this done to me, it didn't hurt, but tasted like shit & got the point across very well, never had to have it again

x2. I only got hit with the belt once or twice, but I did get hit with a bunch of other things like sticks or "switches", remotes, clothes hangers, pretty much whatever was closest at the time lol. I think that spankings are perfectly fine as long as its on the ass. If the kid is hit anywhere besides there, imo, it is considered beating them.

I got the soap one time and I agree, this works very well.

 

I got spanked a lot as a kid...not because I got beat but because I was a bad kid haha!! I didn't learn Its bad when your mom tells you to go find your own switch...

I got my mouth washed out with soap too once or twice..nasty shit!

I agree with spanking, and I'll do it to my kids. Just talking to them doesn't help, because talking turns into yelling, which makes you angry then you start to beat them. Take the kid, explain what and why and spank him a few times and carry on. Repeat as required.
