We have 8 here. All personnel with senoirity or mgmt are required to take the course to operate them. We all wear Nextels all day long for this reason. Had to use one of them last year. Someone got shocked really good working on a LVR motor controller and went down. Good to have them in any building.

In all honesty, I have no idea. It's a major university, so I would assume so, but since I've never seen one, maybe not. The city rescue squad usually ends up someplace on campus at least once or twice a day though. I guess I'll go with no since there isn't one that I know of in our building.

Like the other Fire/EMS folks here, all of our Companies (Engine,Ladder,Rescue) have them. The last incident our crew used ours was a little over a month ago and it was not successful.I have however been involved in their use with good results.Actually,we had a guy arrest on duty two years ago.He was sitting at a watch desk and two guys walked in and found him unresponsive. He had just made an announcement over the House PA so he was only down a matter of seconds.Quick defibrillation,AR and transport resulted in him returning to duty a year later........No question about it,no Defib he dies.

I'd better have them at work. Doesn't make much sense not to have them on the ambulance. :p

We don't have them, we are all first aid trained though. Most of our work is over 40 minutes from a hospital so we are also transport trained. I would like to see one at the shop anyway, to have one on every rig would be expensive.

i wish we had them in every car...but thats unfortunately not feasible...

ive seen them used before...last year at the clemson/carolina football game a guy went down and they used one to keep him alive till they could get him to the ambulance and then the hospital

we lost an officer a little over a year ago to a major heart attack...he was mid foot pursuit and i dont think even that wouldve saved him...but you never know...back up units couldnt do much but perform basic cpr until ems arrived

I lost a buddy during a hockey game that was found unconscious and unresponsive. My wife and I started CPR and rescue breathing but we were unable to save him.
Had the facility we were playing at had an AED it may have turned out different, who knows.
They did not even have a basic first aid kit let alone an AED.
I carry a pocket rescue mask and gloves with me and have a full mask I carry in my truck at all times. Even when I dive I carry a rescue mask as it is more common than not that there are dive related emergencies we may have to deal with.

Sorry to hear about your buddy CAdive,we lost a guy on our team in the dressing room a few years back as well.A sad fact is that it's common in the rinks and as far as I know, there is a defib in every Arena around here.I carry a pockey mask and gloves in my center console as well.

That was the last time I played there, I got into it with owners of that facility about thier complete lack of first aid equipment!
Idiots... I haven't thought about that situation for a long time and it still makes me pissed thinking about it.
If all of you can do one thing for your family and friends take a CPR class or basic first aid, you never know.
Hell you can buy a pretty good first aid kit at Costco for about $25, throw it in your truck. With all the wheelin - hunting - sporting things happening here someone will need it.

One last word on CPR. You may break ribs when you do this effectively.

DO not be alarmed. They are just broken ribs and will mend.

I have head ribs breaking many times in the ER from CPR. It is common.

You have to give enough pressure on the heart to perfuse the entire body and good CPR will result in distal pulses being palpable.

That meand you can feel a pulse in the feet and arms when someone is performing good CPR.

Remember, and this is easy for the men to remember, "Hard and Fast".
