Please help me understand "flexing"

This is not meant to be a hater or smartass thread, I am genuinely curious.

What's the deal with "flexing"?????? I see guys proudly post up pictures of them on trails going over rocks and the like and I can understand that. But I also see guys posting pictures of going over mounds of sand on a parking lot? Or parking midway over a divided median and taking pictures????? I mean what's the point of that? Seems kind of useless and forced to me.

And I never got "mudding" either Offroading or trail crawling seems to have a level of skill and engineering required, but mudding??

Not trying to bash anyone, just want to understand.

Mudding is just for fun.. flexing.. I guess people enjoy that too.

 

Mudding is a hell of a lot of fun! Maybe you have to be a little redneckish to see the fun in it... Kind of the same reason people do donuts, it's just fun to put your foot to floor and see what the truck will do.

As far as flexing, to each their own I suppose. I don't see the point of doing it with a stock truck or even a slightly lifted truck, but those rock crawlers are impressive when their front axle is sitting at a 45 and the back axle is horizontal but in the end it's just showing off what the truck can do.

Building a truck that can flex alot is just like building a car thats fast. Flexing the truck that you just spent alot of money on is fun, just like taking a fast car to the drag strip. Once you do it you want to continue to make the vehicle more capable.

Testing out how much it can flex in random places ( like medians) is a good benchmark for how far you can push the truck before taking it offroad. It also is a good to test that all the work that you just did will work together and not bind. Which is the same as taking a fast car out before you go to the track, to make sure there is no issues and you are getting the results you were looking for.

Mudding actually takes some skill, knowing how hard to push the truck to keep moving while not spinning the wheels. Untill it is nessecary to spin to clear the tires, then you get to put the skinny pedal down, which is always fun to shoot huge rooster tails out of the back of your truck.

I grew up on a farm in NY (yes, there are farms in upstate NY) so I've seen my fair share of mudding. I did live down south after college and loved it! Only reason I moved back was family.

 

Similar, but different.

 

Although there are a lot here in the South, I have found there are rednecks everywhere, they just speak differently depending on where they live.

Ive been dubbed a redneck by everyone i know, and all because i wore boots and jeans and drove a truck my whole life... now i like to kick back in some nice Pumas and some cargo shorts and look good every now and then when im not workin, and i still get called a redneck.. i guess i just take it as a compliment, like Charlie Daniels said 'A Few More Rednecks is what We Need'...

Mudding is real fun because of the skill involved and because of the adrenaline rush. It's fucking fun, on a rainy day, to hit a whole trail in the mud. You need to know precisely when to turn (sometimes you need to turn before you actually get to the turn,) how much to turn and how much to punch on that gas. Soon you're slipping and sliding, moving uphill almost sideways while spitting out a giant, ridiculous rooster tail, all the while Feeling the mud clunk against your undercarriage... Ugh! Where's some mud?!

As for flexing, like Blumpkinson said, it's our equivalent to building up a speed demon. We just like to see our trucks doing their work as we think it looks bad ass. It's also a great way to look for any damage or binding as already stated. Overall, it's just cool to do especially on the trails- looks BA in my opinion.
