Security & the Taco

Hi, folks. New PreRunner owner here, in Jacksonville, FL. Very impressed with our new 2011 SR5 and will have it on a cross-state run less than 24 hrs after buying it.

A question for the group: I had thought the 'smart key' security system Toyota now uses gave fairly good security until I learned one of the most often stolen cars is a late model Camry...and they rely on the same 'smart key' technology. So obviously, some of the thieves are smart enough to defeat that.

Here's my Q...and it's NOT about security systems, so if you are eager to talk about those, please look for another thread. What I'm wondering is just how 'threatened' is a Taco PreRunner vs. all the other cool cars out there? How many of you opted for a security system...or didn't? Is one more at risk than the average car...or not? Like noses, I realize everyone has an opinion on this - but I'm hoping some of you have dug into this topic a bit and might have some data to share. Getting any hard intel would be helpful to gauge what the risk is...or whether my steering wheel lock is a sufficient add'l deterrent.

Most thieves just wanna rifle through your car for cash/cds/electronics and pocket those. Keep the valuables out of view and haven an alarm and you should be good.

 

Ummmm news flash, Smart Keys Don't Stop Tow Trucks....

 

my grandfather use to tell me that locks only keep honest people honest. i mean think about it...the only thing seperating them from what they want is a thin piece of glass. how does a loud nosie keep someone from bashing out a window and getting a 5 finger discount on your shit? it doesent. just hide the valuables. my truck is never locked

From past experiences(Not with Toyota though) I dont ever trust factory alarms. I never know how sensative it is and I usually opt for aftermarket as you can easily adjust the sensitivity.

My last car(Mazda 6) had a factory alarm, The theif broke my back window, rummaged through the car and glove box. Stole my case of CD's(over 300 CD's total, not buying CD's anymore, Ipod FTW) and my alarm didn't go off until he hit my trunk opening button to get my subs in the trunk.

So I bought the 2-way Viper alarm and I can see if my truck is locked, or if someone breaks in, I can see what door they opened or if my truck is being started... Now thats security!

 

if a security system gives you peace of mind, buy one.
