Manny tranny flush?...

Does a manual trans need to be flushed or what not? im goin to look at a used taco this wknd and i wanna make sure i ask the right questions so i know what im buying. its a 2000 sr5 4x4 ex cab manny of course. 180000 miles. any other useful tidbits or questions would be helpful of what to look for.

I usually do mine every 30-40k Miles.

 

Kinda depends, if you tow/haul or constant stop and go traffic you should do it more frequently. I change mine at 50,000 mile intervals at most but some have gone much longer.

 

what about the clutch itself? sorry im a complete noob, and a girl but im tryin to learn i have lots of questions, im pretty sure the dealership the taco is at is going to hate me by the end of the day

 

You can flush it. Take an extra quart of oil with the drain plug open and poor it in and presto, manual tranny flush. You should change the fluid out according to the owners manual. But the dealership shoulda done it anyway, so check the dip stick for the fluid to be clear and bright. Like fresh engine oil.

75w-90 or sooner depending on use. 2.7 quarts for 4 cylinder and 2WD V6 and 2.3 quarts for 4WD V6

 

You can tell a lot by the way the clutch feels. Is it nice and smooth with gear changes, does it not engage until the last 1/2" of travel, that type of stuff.

Don't worry about the dealership, you're the customer, you're allowed to put them through the ringer. God knows they're not going to do you any favors, they aren't called the stealership for nothin...

 

fluid check is done by removing upper bolt (fill hole) inserting finger to check where fluid level is. fluid shouold be right at the bottom of fill hole

 

I've heard of people never changing MT fluid. Atleast in non-Toyotas. My dad bought a Chevy 1500 brand new ordered from the factory and only changed the fluid when he replaced the clutches. Moderate summer towing, and an every day driver. It lasted to 300k miles when he traded it in. Still ran pretty strong, but I also wouldn't have wanted to buy it.

If you're serious about buying a vehicle, take it for a long test drive over to a mechanic that you know and trust, or atleast a hobby wrencher/greese monkey with a garage that you can use for an hour or so. Let them sit and sweat it out while you make up your mind.

i believe just as a good rule of thumb, all fluids and tune-up items (plugs/wire if applicable, filters, etc.) should all be done sooner than later when buying a used vehicle. its just for piece of mind and its an easy was for you to know when things should be serviced in the future. My $0.02

 

thanks you guys are awesome, is the bolt easily accessed for me to check it? i made up a checklist so i dont forget to check anything, i tend to get excited about stuff and forget things. im taking a flashlight, hammer, and magnet with me to check it out. i was gonna swing by the yota dealership and see if they would peek at it for me without charging me. i wish my brother was closer, hes an awesome greese monkey, im wishing i would have paid attention back then when he was explaining all that crap to me but i didnt care then. good thing i dont mind getting greasy tho if i have to stick my finger in it.

 

super easy to access. crawl under the truck right below the driver door, first thing you'll see is the transfer case. directly in front of that is the tranny. bolt will be on the upper left side of tranny case. directly to the right of the fill plug is a wired plug.

 

be aware that there may be some fluid that runs out of the hole do to slight over filling or if the truck is not level.

 

Post where you live and I'm sure anybody on here will happily check out the truck for you. That is if your bro isn't easy access.

im stoked about goin to look at the taco tomorrow, i even had a dream about it! maybe its a sign. i feel like a fat kid that just got a lifetime pass to willy wonkas choc factory! esp if im able to get it and it passes my test. not to mention my gpa is an ocd perfectionist master welder and has a badassss shop at his house, i have every and any tool i need! just as long as he doesnt get too mad about me sellin the mini for a taco, he and my gma bought it when my exploder exploded, i dont think he can stay mad at his grand daughter forever tho
