this bus has got to be more than 6k lbs.

yeah but if a 1st gen can tow it UP HILL and i didn't see the truck sagging, imagine what a 2nd gen can do.

oh. cause after watching this video at a invisible shield kiosk yesterday at first i was like "OH LOOK! TACOMA! " then i saw what it was towing and i was thinking i could tow my friend's 16,000lbs eliminator to lake havasu this year.

 

If there's no weight bearing down on the bumper, it wouldn't sag... There's a big difference between getting a heavy load slowly rolling and towing. It's a neat video but not a great feat in my opinion.

 

Don't do it, max towing for yours is 6500

There's a huge difference between "pulling" capability and "towing" capability.

The Tacoma's not built to "tow" that kind of weight.

That motor home weighs anywhere between 11,000 and 15,000 lbs.

A Tacoma can easily "pull" that weight plus more for a short distance under 5 mph. Heck.....in the short 20 months that i've owned my Tacoma, i've pulled out a stuck commuter bus and a single axle dump truck, both weighing more than that camper.

Attempting to tow that kind of weight would not only destroy my engine, transmission and suspension, it would pose a safety hazard to me and other motorists out on the streets and highways.

 

i still don't understand the difference between towing and pulling. im still a noob at all of this. what is towing and what is pulling?

in the video the tacoma is PULLING, right? how would they have changed that scenario to make that towing?

cause in a month or two my friends want to go to lake havasu. one of them have a 16,000 lb eliminator, it sits on a trailer that has 2 axles with the wheel base only a few feet apart.

if i were to haul that from LA, CA to lake havasu, AZ. is that towing or pulling?

 

There is a difference between that bus in the video, and a trailer. A trailer has something called "tongue weight", and also when pulling a tailer, you have to worry about something called "stopping", whereas when you stop your truck, the trailer must also stop, rather than continue at full speed into the rear of your vehicle.

 

at work we have to pull trailers sometimes. they have these things that apply brakes to the trailer if i use the truck's brakes. is that what i'll need to haul my friend's boat? or would it still be too heavy?

 

It all depends on the weight/length of the boat obviously, you have to remember that you need to be able to safely efficiently accelerate and decelerate the trailer, and in the case of a boat, pull it up hill. Thats what the towing capacity rating is taking in account for you.

Your friend should know how much his boat and trailer weighs if he's registered it.

 

Tow ratings are there for a reason. Ignore them to your, and everyone around you's peril.
Just because it pulled the camper a few feet does not mean it would work to tow a 16k trailer. Your GCRW would be exceeded by 10k lbs, iirc.
If you'd like to do something stupid, like that, give me$ 200. It would be far less risky and costly in the long run.

 

i'm just asking... that boat was just an example. i didn't take it last year for that reason. but i when i saw this video at the invisible shield shop, it raised some questions.
