SORRY ABOUT THIS, I NEED CHANGE THE SEAL OF THE DIFFERENTIAL GEAR TACOMA 2007 TRD

 

Attempt this at your own risk. I am not responsible if something goes wrong. You'll either need to order a new toyota gasket which is made out of paper, or you can use the ultra black rtv gasket made by permatex. Either way, you're going to have to do the following:

• unbolt the driveshaft
• drain rear differential
• jack up rear of vehicle
• remove rear wheels
• remove rear brakes
• pull rear axles
• unbolt the thrid member
• clean ALL gasket material from the housing and the third member
• apply new gasket material
• reassemble

make sure to torque everything correctly and you may need to replace the axle seals and o-rings at the same time. I recommend the 1 minute gasket from Napa. It's made by permatex but it's ready for use one minute after being applied to the surface. Still use the ultra black since it's the most oil resistant.

Question..you said remove rear brakes..is it necessary?

If you want to pull the axles all the way out then yes. Alternatively, you can just pull them partially out until they clear the third member. However, be very careful and support them so that they don't rest on your axle seals. If they do then it can cause the axle seals to leak later on.

 

I can't believe how much work is required to do such a simple task. On my F-150 you simply remove the 10 or so bolts holding the diff cover on. Let the oil drain. Clean and apply gasket maker. Put the cover on. Done.

 

yep, the tradeoff is that setting up (or swapping out) a new ring and pinion is easier because you can do it on the bench instead of under the truck. It's not much of an advantage if you've got a leaking seal though.
