Brand names (Hella, KC, Vision X, Baja Designs, PIAA, etc.) aren't the first consideration IMO.

    The TYPE of light is...

    1) Pencil (spot) Beams: For long distance down the road/ field... narrow beam pattern, high speed driving applications. Best mounted high, above cab.

    2) Driving (euro) Beams: For more area in front of your truck lit up, like high beams and low beams together. Best mounted in front of truck same as headlights.

    3) Fog (cornering) Beams: For close in, wide pattern light as well as for use in fog. Best mounted low, below bumper.

Now, of the three types of light patterns you have choices on how the light is produced:

    a) Halogen (inexpensive, but draws more power. 55-130 watts typical)

    b) HID or Xenon (expensive, but draws less power and produces brighter light. 35-70 watts) Avoid colors higher than 5,000ºK, as they will be dimmer.

    c) LED (Very expensive, but draws almost no power for the super amount of light output. Not recommended for dusty conditions like off road racing because of high reflective effect).

For my needs, I have 2 Hella 4000 100 watt Halogen pencil beams and 2 Kragen 35 watt HID euro beams:

I have photos of the light comparrison between stock, HID, & Pencils... Let me know if you would like to see that or if you have seen it already.

would the protective laminate be a good thing to get to protect the lights a little bit to?

    dont hold your breath.
 I had 4 hella 500's and was not the least bit impressed.

I converted 2 of them to HID and WOW. I would recommend everyone with the 500s or 700s to convert them to hids.

I had (6) Hella 500s on my truck, all halogen at one point. HATED THEM

I think having one Hella 500 converted to HID on the front of my truck would have been way more useful

HIDs are the way to go, without a doubt
