    Need some help here. This weekend, I'm about to embark on the heavily popular front grill mod. I'm not going "satoshi" though, I want to try the "Jamestoshi" where the grill is not recessed as much. Having the offroad model, I have to sand down the chrome grill surround and Toyota emblem and paint as all of you know.

    Questions::confused:

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but from doing my homework, I've learned the order of operation is sand, prime, paint, clear coat. Correct??

    What grit sand paper?

    What paint will best match the color and finish of toyota's black?

    Thanks for the help!!

    The higher the grit, the better. I'd use 200 to rough it up, smooth it with 400, then finish off with 600. You could probably paint after 400 but a little extra sanding is worth it in the end.

    Also, you'll probably want to use an adhesion promotor to help the paint stick. Dupli color makes one of those also.

    Dupli color is usually available at an auto parts store like Autozone, Advanced Auto or Napa depending on what you have around you. Look on your door jamb, there should be a 3-digit color code that will match up to the paint cans.

    Do a test patch first on a piece of cardboard or something to see how well it matches. Some people are more picky than others. If you don't like how it matches, there are other options like spraycansunlimited, paintscratch (online paint dealers).

    It is a primer, just kind of a special one to help the topcoat bond to the substrate. Probably 2 - 3 coats depending on how think you put it on, then I do 4+ coats of color depending on the paint is covering and another 4+ coats of clear to protect it all.
