4wd LO range warning beep?

Ok, I finally used 4wd LO range and the truck emits a really annoying warning beep through the speakers.
Has anyone a fix for this? It's so loud I said F%&^ that and went back to 4wd HI.
My truck is a sport model with the VSC.

It only beeps when it's not engauged and 4lo is selected.

 

You have to put it in neutral to engage 4lo. It only beeps when something is not right.

 

That's what I did, stopped the truck, put in neutral and select 4lo. it started beeping immediatley but it was in 4lo. I was only in it for a brief moment and went back to 4 hi. Any ideas? did it just not fully engage?

 

Hmm.. not sure, hopefully someone else responds with ideas. Mine did that when I forgot to put it in neutral. Usually if I have 4hi engaged, then stop, put it in "N" and select 4lo, I've never had a problem. I'm sure others will chime in.

 

Yeah, I was in 4hi for like 10 miles on a rocky slow trail. I came to a section and went to 4lo. It was in low, I could feel it.
Well anyway it obviously wasn't right if that's not normal. I'll see if it was me. I hope it was just driver error!

Did the 4LO light on the dash go solid or keep blinking?

 

The light went solid.

 

If I recall correctly, I'm pretty sure if the light goes solid, you're engaged. Usually it blinks if something is wrong or it can't engage. Sounds funky.

 

try putting it in park, take your foot off the brake (alligns gears), foot back on brake, shift into neutral, then shift it to 4lo.

 

I've never heard of this before...how does taking your foot off the brake while in park align the gears?

 

someone told me this years ago. i've never really thought about it, but whenever mine won't shift, i do it and it's never failed

 

It happens to all of us if we are going into L4, and don't have the tranny in the correct position.

Neutral (N) isn't the same as Park (P) when going into or out of L4. The beeping means you are in (P) Park when trying to go into L4... Shift to (N) Neutral and re-try.

I know he said he was... but it wouldn't be the first time we subconciously think of Park and Neutral being the same thing... Just a double check for him to try before going to the mechanic.

 

That's actually pretty true... I remember the first time I put mine in 4lo while still in drive and damn, lights were flashing, bells went off, I thought I initiated the self-destruct button and was waiting for the count down!!

 

Hey again here's an update to my dilema.
remember that this was the first time I've ever needed 4LO in this Tacoma and I've owned it for 5 years. I changed the differential fluid about 2 months ago;
I did stop and shift to neutral, all that. This isn't my first 4x taco or other 4x for that matter.

So after work today I stopped on a flat dirt road.
I stopped completely, took my foot off the break and while in nuetral I shifted into 4lo, I wasn't moving forward or rearward while in N.
Everything was fine..
NO beeping or anthing different. The problem was I'm guessing the terrain?
Here is where I think the difference took place; originally when I tried it was in total back country trails in Death Valley and the wheels were cranked to one side and I needed some LO range torque to get around this uphill rock garden, I started spinning and then backed off and did the 4lo deal.
I think I'm ok now so thanks for everyone chiming in. Maybe I just needed a few more feet for my low range to kick in/??

I know mine is touchy. If it won't engauge on the first try, I move an inch or two and try again. Sometimes it goes right in. It has gotten easier since the first few attempts. Just gotta get it broken in.
