I want to share my somewhat frustrating experience with wheel and tire selection. I decided on:

    285/70/17 Goodyear MT/R Kelvar tires
17x9 KMC XD Addict wheels -12 offset

My truck is a 2011 4x4, access cab, TRD Offroad
    3" ReadyLift lift kit
    Bushwacker pocket style fender flares

I had to remove my mudflaps and trim a substaintial amount of my fender liners and some of my Bushwacker fender flares. Despite all this trimming and a 3" lift, my front tires rub. The rubbing occurs on frame at near full-lock turn and it makes an annoying noise.

So....I sort of wish I had chosen 16" wheels instead of 17s. I really like the look of the 285 width but at 70 series they are about 1/2" too tall.

Has anyone tried 285/70/16s? I think they might be perfect. I realize that there are not many choices in 285/70/16 other than the Nittos.

Would spacers or a different offset help?

I spent a fortune on five new wheels and tires so this rubbing is a drag. Be warned about 285/70/17s..at least the GY Kelvars!

You just need some more lift. My 285's never rubbed with the Toytec kit. Now that I've gone to a RCD kit I can clear larger ones.

Are you sure the lift is at 3" I ask because im at 3" and running 285/70-17's and only rubbed on mud flap. I do rub ever so lightly on front little bump of wheel well only in reverse full lock. I have not cut anything

They are going to rub on the frame unless you get some different rims. What is the BS of your wheels? Its not that big of deal, my tires rub the frame, just dont turn so sharp if it makes you angry. I dont really care, its not hurting anything and the only time i turn super sharp is offroad.

    Thanks for the replies...

jrobson...will more lift move the tire further from the frame? (sorry..maybe stupid question..I am not sure how the lift affects the frame clearance)

Sheppy: yes, a 3" ReadyLift, not just the leveling kit

Rebel: different wheels? my 17x9s are -12 offset which is 4.5BS

    thanks for your thoughts!

I rub my fender a bit even with my 4 inch spindle lift with 285/70/17... I haven't trimmed. Don't worry about it. If it is really bugging you just get a cab mount chop.

I run 33x12.50 17's which are about an Inch wider than 285's. I had to chop the body mount and trim the rear of the front fender. But I only chopped and cut for off road use. I have the toytec 3" lift with 885 springs and a 220Lb bumper. My truck doesn't and never has rubbed the frame. My wheels are 17x9 Addicts with 4.5bs, even at full lock I don't touch the frame. Are you sure your not rubbing on the body mount?

Mine rub.... Remember when modding there will be cons.... Modding isn't always gonna be just like stock you will sacrifice gas mileage, rubbing, etc..

rebelT: yea, you're right, it's not a big deal..i'll get used to it

2011TocoSport: the rubbing occurs on the tip of the frame section (shaped like a heal of a boot) where the body sits.

Krimson: yep, modding is new to me and I have a lot to learn, but it's fun! You are also right about the negative impact on gas milege!

Ohhhh that makes sense that its on the body mount. I thought it was on the boxed in part of the frame. My bad, different BS wouldnt make a difference. Check out the the body mount chop if you really hate the rubbing.

The wheels and tires aren't really the issue, they are just fine (when running 285s with a 2.5+ lift) what you are experiencing is a common problem with running 285s on these trucks. They look just right, for the truck but they rub like a bitch with out trimming shit. You will def have to do the cab chop mod. Truck looks great though

I got 295/70/17's with Fox 2.5 CO's and I never rub, but I also have an All Pro bumper which gives me much needed clearance up front . Maybe u need more lift up front or look in to an aftermarket bumper?

if you has less back spacing it would rub less on the frame. the the more a tire sticks out due to higher offset when you turn your wheel it hits the frame more at full lock.

    Thanks guys.

I'll look into a higher lift and/or coil-overs for the front or else just get used to the rubbing. In the meantime, the body mount will not be damaged by minor rubbing, it's solid! I appreciate everyones' input.
