Good GPS for trail use when wheeling?

    For offroad I use either a Lowrance Baja 540c or an HDS-5 Baja. I prefer the 540c but it's been discontinued.

    Because of size and cost they're generally not options unless you really get into some rough terrain in a regular basis, but they do work wonderfully.

    Even the HDS-5 Baja has been disco'd and is replaced with the HDS-5m. Great units!

    Ah wow. Can't say I'm surprised. The HDS-5 Baja blows compared to the older unit. Takes 5-10 minutes just to boot up and get signal.

    Base maps suck, but you can upgrade that with 3rd party software similar to how I updated maps on my Garmin/Kenwood in-dash.

    If you have a laptop and a GPS, download USAPhotomaps from Jdmcox.com. It's free, and downloads free seamless USGS 7.5 minute topo maps, B&W aerial photos that were used to revise topo courtesy of a joint effort between Microsoft and the Gov't. Plug in your GPS and it will show your location on the map or photo. Sweet.

    I use a Garmin 550 with some topos loaded in it. Garmin stands behind their product too. I had 1 Magellan and will never have another one.
