Grey Wire mod help.... Stuck in 4x4!?

So im trying to do the grey wire mod. I located the plug at the bottom of the 4x4 box, the one with the red sticker to the left of the brake pedal. I clipped the grey wire, stripped a little of it, and I used one of those cone type twist on caps to connect it to a 14 guage wire i bought at Ace hardware. The cone went on good and snug. taped it up well. Then i put a smaller cone on the grey wire stub comming out of the plug. i plugged it back into the 4x4 box.

When i went to ground it, i realized that i don't have the same bolt head that the OP of the grey wire sticky thread had. So i crimped on one of those crimps with a washer and i put it under the small nut the holds the 4x4 box too the body of the truck. The crimp washer thing was a little large for the nut but it makes contact....

anyway i was all excited so i went to try the truck out... i didn't try the diff lock thing because first thing i noticed was the 4x4 light was on when i never touched it. I tried pressing and depressing it multiple times but it never comes on. I did smaller circles in my cul-de-sac with the button pushed in and out and i can feel that 4x4 is engaged no matter what.

What did i do wrong? should i ground it somewhere else? should i have not used those cone things? did i get too thick of a wire? am i just cursed?

I can snap pics if anyone thinks that would help....

Man I did this mod so long ago I can't really help you on this but I do know one thing you need to replace that twist connector for at least a crimp connector Twist connectors are for home wiring. Take some pictures of what you did.

but it did not change anything.... i'll get pics.

 

okay wait.... i think i know what i did. instead of grounding the end of the grey wire that comes out of the connector (which plugs to the 4x4 box) i grounded the end of the grey wire that comes from god knows where Timbuktu somewhere in the chassis. Was I supposed to do it the other way around??? If so that sucks cuz i dont have much wire to work with. i cut it a bit close to the connector.

 

yes, you're supposed to ground the gray wire coming out of the connector (ecu). how close did you cut it?

 

I'm not 100% familiar with what exactly this mod is doing (electrically), but it seems to me that you're tricking the computer into thinking that the gray wire as no signal, meaning that you should have grounded the portion of the wire that is coming from the connector and put your wire nut (they're called wire nuts) on the portion of the wire that you grounded (coming from you don't know where).

 

Success...... alright it works. took it for a test spin. Man i was sweating for a couple minutes there. Not just because it's like 99* down here and humid as a sauna.... but this it the first electrical anything i've ever done..... besides use an ohm thingie to figure out that the fuel pump on my old sportbike was bad... but that wasn't anything that involved cutting and re-routing. Sucks, this cut into my dirt bike riding time now....

Yeah i have to say, the pics in the stickied thread made it look like there would be a lot more space down there. Call me cumbersome, but it was hard to do find work with my fingers in that tiny space...
