High pitch sound made when traveling 70+ mph...

I just recently purchased a new 2011 Tacoma Prerunner Dlb Cab shrt bed and love it. The only problem I having is a strange loud high pitch hum when traveling 70+ mph. It sounds like it's coming from the center console but it's obviously coming from outside due the speed.

I installed a stubby antenna and thought that was creating the sound, but wasn't. Then I thought it was the windshield wipers but turned them on and the sound still continued.

I'm really clueless and could use some ideas or thoughts to what is causing this obnoxious sound once reaching certain wind speeds.

I remember reading something about a TSB for this. Take the truck back to the dealer. I think it had something to do with the windshield moulding.

Get it into your dealer. This will be fixed under warranty.

I had the same noise. I narrowed it down to.........my wife!

Try pressing on the windshield around the rear view mirror when you hear it. Does it go away or get a lot quieter? That will help narrow it down.

My 2005 had a bad windshield gasket and would holler like at bitch at highway speeds...I gotta crack in it from off roading and had it replaced...no more noise

 

I've had that sound but only once, going 75 on the highway into a 30 mph headwind and only when I would pass the semi trucks. Basically the equivalent of about a 100+mph wind.

If it becomes chronic, I'll deal with it. Would be super-annoying if I had the issue constantly, it's a pretty loud buzz.

 

My truck has this noise and I have returned to the dealer (@ Miller Toyota of Anaheim, CA) where I bought it twice and they have refused to do anything about it. The first time I mentioned the noise I had less than 4,000 miles on my truck. I noticed the noise during my first long distant drive. Miller Toyota’s Service Manager said they cannot test the car going over 65 mph and if they cannot hear it for themselves then there is nothing they will do.

Second time (@ 10,000 miles) I showed them several short videos that my wife filmed as I drove 65 mph on a windy day. The noise was very annoying and bad in the videos. However, again the Miller Toyota Mechanics told me there is nothing they can do unless they hear the sound firsthand.

Now I am furious and considering small claims court.

This is a safety issue. I have a newborn baby and if I was to get into a car accident, I will need that windshield to function or break apart as Toyota’s Automotive Designers planned for during collision tests. A faulty seated windshield was never studied during crash tests and I am not about to turn my family into a crash-test-dummy simply because Toyota mechanics will not repair my new 2011 Toyota Tacoma.

I bought a Toyota due to their reputation as “reliable” and now I am finding out that Toyota is not so reliable after all.

I hope someone will read this and acknowledge that this common and widespread windshield problem is not a joke, and issue a 2011 TBS or Recall. This way, others including myself, will not be hassled by service technicians when we bring our precarious trucks in for windshield repair.

 

You're assuming it's faulting seated. The noise does not equate directly to a faulty windshield or a safety issue; just a side effect of the design. There's a TSB out there. Call Toyota corporate and start a service complaint case. Or add a little clear silicone like other folks have done.

 

Hello Polymerhead, first thank you for responding to the Toyota Tacoma Windshield Noise post, it is obvious that the windshield problem that I am experiencing is the same as all the other complaints on Utube, forum posts, and grievances.

You mentioned that there is a TSB about this common issue. However, that TSB is related to vehicles prior to 2011 and not being acknowledged by Miller Toyota of Anaheim’s technicians, location I purchase said vehicle.

About adding the silicone and repairing it myself. This is a new vehicle (under 4 k miles when noticing sound) and I should not have to do an amateur job on repairing what is potentially a dangerous situation. Faulty designs are deadly in many situations, including windshields that are not performing as expected. One never knows what will happen when encountering new non-studied circumstances. In the event of a serious accident the windshield my not fragment as anticipated, but remain as one piece flying into the truck’s cab and dismembering a passenger. One must assume a scenario like that could happen until Toyota Designers have studied these faulty windshields in crash tests.

Print out the TSB I listed in the third post and take it to your dealer and demand satisfaction. If they are unwilling to help, find another dealer. The nice thing about living in SoCal is there is a Toyota dealer every three blocks, just like Starbucks. I have had decent luck with Toyota of San Bernardino, although not with this particular issue.

 

Dude, you don't have to worry about insulting me. I'm just trying to help you out. Doesn't look like you've called up Toyota and started a service case. If you take the time to call them, and remind them there's a TSB out for earlier years, they will probably call up the dealer and make an inquiry. That usually gets the dealer in gear and often they'll be super peachy after that. Also, if you look at the TSB, the fix is just more silicone caulk. Sometimes I guess dealers replace the gasket rather than mess with the silicone, but it doesn't seem to be a safety issue, as they will probably just add more caulk. So, even if you get Toyota to address the issue, they're almost surely just going to add more caulk. I'm not saying you're wrong to expect more, but sometimes the best solution is the easiest, you know? Hope it helps.

 

So take it to a different dealer. You are not married to Miller. If they are not providing acceptable service, go somewhere else and don't give them any more if your money.

I would absolutely not use them for routine maintenance service.
