What Fuel Octane are you using ?

Lets write this all out.

Say you get 20 miles to the gallon.

So if you fill up when the light goes off, you've got 340 miles per tank.

So, 17 x $3.43 = $58.31

$58.31 = 340 miles per tank

if premium gets you +40mpg

17 x $3.64 = $61.88 per tank

So you get 11.7% more miles per gallon for $3.57 more than what you pay for regular. Is that what is being said?

 

I run 91, because the chip i have installed is programed for 91 Octane

 

The 4.0 runs wide band O2 sensors on left and right banks, this is a pretty high performance engine. It's not just running on a base fuel map and limited feedback.

 

You don't go from 20 MPG to 40 MPG because you use 91 instead of 87

 

I didn't say that, somebody else did. And it's not 20 to 40 MPG, it's 40+ miles per tank.

 

I have tried 87 and 85 and saw no difference...so 85 here

 

For normal driving I use 87, when towing 91.

 

89 since the first fill up when I bought mine in 2005.

 

I am at a high altitude...6K+ feet...because of the thinner air you can run lower octane with the same results...My GTI called for premium fuel (93 close to sea level-91 here)....The highest you can get is 91..mid grade is 87...the funny thing is it cost the same as 87 closer to sea-level.

Damn you now you got me thinking about it...lol...any other high altitude drivers thoughts?

 

Less heat energy in high test then there is in 87. I don't run any thing on high test not needed in just about any standard ride complete waste of money. Add super charger/turbo higher fuel rate with a chip and then go up to 91 you'll need it to cool down the egt.

 

Just a heads up, your vehicle is going to need some time to adapt(ECU reset and/or couple tanks of gas). It doesn't know you actually have 91 until it "tests the waters" and re programs timing. But on the other hand you might get some results real quick towing.

 

I use regular (which is 86 octane in the Albuquerque area). I've never tried mid-grade or premium so I can't vouch for higher MPG or increased performance. I doubt these claims as octane is only a measurement of a fuel's anti-knock property.

 

The 02 sensors on the 4.0 are not wideband. They are narrowband sensors.

 

I just actually read the owner's manual on mine, and it said it was rated for 87 octane, but Toyota tested it at 91 octane. I'm going to try the 93 octane for a few fill ups and see what happens. I'm pretty sure I'll notice a few more miles out of my tank and not to mention it's better on your engine.

Right track, better way to quantify it though is:

Reg: costs 58.31 for 340 miles, so $0.1715/mile
Prem: costs 61.88 for 380 miles, so $0.1628/mile

Cheaper cost/mile to premium.

FYI, personally I have seen no mpg difference between running 87 and 93, so I run 87.

 

I use the race fuel. Cause every stop light is a quarter mile to me. bout 118 octane.

 

How the hell is it better on your engine? If the engine was built to run 87 and the ECU can adjust parameters (timing, ignition, etc) to run different octanes than... your claim is completely false. I run 87 because its cheaper and the truck is meant to run on 87.

Higher Octane gas will run "dirtier" through your engine since you more than likely won't get a complete burn i.e combustion... leaving you with carbon deposits. Until your ECU adjusts to the new fuel and its within its range of parameters

By your logic than we all should run Race Gas! 118 octane

 

I too live my life a 1/4 mile at a time.

I usually run C16, I hear it's great on cats and 02 sensors.
