driving tires through the border..

Has anyone bought tires and drove them through the border?

 

nope. but i might just have too. i dont live 2 far from the border. we'll i should probable wear out my stock tires first? or what

 

I've drove tires through the border a several times.
It would depend on how strict the border is, and if the officer wants to make a name for his/her self. I know here the borders are really slack.

 

Are tires really expensive in canada?

 

Everything is really expensive in Canada.. It's crazy. What we pay for our Tacoma's would scare most people haha! The duratracs i'll be ordering next week are $1100 local, and like 840 - rebates online. But I live on the border, so i take advantage of the good prices!

 

Go on a rainy day and bring back food or clothing with you. You need to declare something. Don't come back with clean tires and a dirty truck, you know what I mean. My Michelin were 750 for 2 at home and 600 across the border.

 

are you having them mounted or just putting them in your bed and driving them back?

 

One of my friends at work said he bought tires in the States and had them mounted at Sears. When he went back to the border, the asshole at Sears had phoned and told them he had had tires mounted!! Get a life Sears dude!!

 

The shop I deal with give you 10% discount because you're a Canuck and will take you to the shopping mall if you need to get other stuff while they put the tires on.

 

I know this is an old thread, but I'm planning a trip down there during this long weekend and I need new tires. can someone point me in the right direction?? Crossing through peace arch and will be heading just past south center.

 

sears matches shipped prices online and they are in bellingham. I bought mine from discount tire, had them send them to my mail box brought them back over the border , paid the taxes and had them put on here in van. either way you save money... discount tire, tire rack are usually the lowest prices.

 

I was thinking of getting a set of winters this fall in Maine,but a friend at work told me that Canada Customs can tax the whole truck as new.if the tires are on it when you cross,of course this does depend on the border guards mood.

A friend just bought a Silverado in Phoenix and got new tires for it before leaving for Edmonton. He had all the paperwork for the truck but told Customs that the tires were on it when he bought it - big mistake. Instead of roughly $50 in duty for the tires, he spent more than $500 in duty and fines and more than half a day having his truck searched.

 

Tell them you got a flat and because it's 4WD you have to get all matching tires so the traction is equal.

 

i'd say this!! lol. thats what i will tell mom and had on the 4wheeler when it needs new tires.

 

I live in Winnipeg and am about 50 min to the border. Last summer i bought wheels and tires and went across to pick them up. For the tires alone they were $550 taxes in where if i bought them in Canada from Sturgeon Tire $1200.

 

it is a sad, sad thing that we have to go over the border to get good prices on tires and parts for our trucks,but it is a fact of life.I'm only 2 hours away from the Maine/ Canadian border and I am thinking of going down myself just for winter tires.one company wanted 333.00 for a winter tire and in Maine I can get it for 185.00.

No problems. Get them a little dirty so they don't stick out like a sore thumb and grab a few groceries and a case of beer and your good to go. Yes sir, no sir and they'll most likely let you go without paying anything.

I would say false as well. Canadian truck, you've already paid your taxes, can't see how they could tax you again.

Also, there are places in Calais you can have items shipped to. Order your tires online, drive down, pick them up, and get VIP to mount them. That is what I do, even cheaper that way.
