Catalytic Converter Thefts in Davis,CA

Just stumbled upon this article. States that thieves are targeting toyota trucks and stealing the Cats to recycle them for cash.

That sucks!! I wonder if insurance company's would cover something like that.

 

Thankfully they are of no value here as we don't have inspections.

Are they that easy to remove?

 

When I was chopping my exhaust pipe shorter, my neighbor heard it and came running over ready to kick some ass haha

Dunno how easy the factory one is to remove I have a Flowmaster on there and its all tacked so I dont think I need to worry but yea I guess they are easy to get off on the factory models

 

They just hit a Hyundai delaership in our area. They took like 30 in one night,

 

Insurance paid for mine, minus deductible. My cat was stolen out of my 90 Toyota pickup in 2007 when I lived in Davis. This shit has been happening for awhile, police said they knew of 4 trucks that got jacked that night, and that was when I called at 7am the next morning!

Thieves cut the pipe with a sawzall on both sides, taking your O2 sensor with it. They also do it at park and ride lots in the middle of the day! happened to a coworker who rides light rail. Police don't need a bait truck, they need to hang out at the recycling center!

 

I read a post on Facebook about a guy who drives an '08 4wd. They got his Cat at a local cafe one night just after dark. Cost him a good chunk of money, not to mention time, to get things put back right. Now he has some flexible mechanics wire decorated with small, needle sharp, 3-way fish hooks hanging just down from his converter.
PS--this ought to draw some response from the dime-store lawyers in the forum.

Reminds me of my time working at office depot years ago... thieves would come in, grab any kind of electronics they could get their hands on, go into a back isle and split out all the goodies they could using box-cutters to get through the security plastic, then pocket the goods and stroll out the door. Well one time we found an empty box with blood all over it and a blood trail heading out the door. Stupid fucker cut himself with his knife. Must have been bad too because there was a LOT of blood...

 

i know catalytic converters have a screen of titanium in them, a pretty pricy metal. no wonder they hit a whole lot of hyundais

 

This is another good reason to put on skids, which is one of the first things I'm putting on my new '11 Taco. Takes these theives about 2 mins probably to sawzall them off and walk away.

 

Well then why don't we get a bunch of members together and an equal number of people who have other cars. We can park our Tacomas in davis where they look like they would make an easy target for thieves, all the while hiding in a non Tacoma vehicle. Then when they show up and start to go to work. Pull up and beat the ever lovin' sheet out of them?

Long time ago I read an article in a Sportbike mag (think it was an Australian magazine) or something and they did that with a Triumph Speed Triple as the bait bike. Bunch of guys inlcuding of course the bikes owner who was built like a 6 foot 4 tree stump, all hid in a van and surprise!
