Since last September 1 got 14mpg 1 time (blizzard), 15 mpg 1 time, 16 mpg 3 times, 17 mpg 13 times, 18 mpg 13 times, 19 mpg 11 times, and 20 mpg twice. Wind, load, and above or below 65 mpg are factors in mpg.

In the 6 years I have had a 4.0 V-6 (on double cab 4WD Tacomas) I got over 19 mpg twice that I recall. Once was on Mexican gas (no ethynol). When I get 18 mpg it is usually on Mexican gas or pure easy highway driving. 16-17 is typical for my daily driving in SoCal on American gas.

I just purchased my truck last week, 09 V6 SR5 Access 4X 14k miles, I am going to put my second tank in today after work and I should fall somewhere around 22. I filled it Sunday with 18.5 gallons, as of right now I have 380 miles on that tank. I expect the light to come on sometime on my trip home which is about 37 miles.

However, I drive 75ish miles round trip and 68 or so of that is highway. It is through some of Western Washington's worst traffic so half of the 75 is in stop and go.

For the other half I set the cruise at 65 and with OD I'm at about 1800-1900 RPM.

I read an article that said babying the gas pedal hurts your MPG. It's better to get to 50 in 15 seconds than in 25 or 30 seconds because you get to your cruising gear faster. That rang true in my previous vehicle and am assuming it's helping me here too...

Coasting in Neutral actually hurts your mileage, albeit a tiny bit, also it's hard on the tranny and generally not safe. I'll see if I can find the article I read the MPG loss in. Basically it says that newer vehicles have stuff built in so when your foot is off the gas you use way less fuel than in neutral idling. The spin of the tires keeps the engine going. Then gas is applied at the normal rate when you press the pedal again.

I would check your math and numbers very closely. 22 mpg doing 70 on the highway seems improbable.

Why would the spin of tires keep the engine going?

I've gotten 20-22 mpg every trip I've taken and average around 18.5 daily driving with a mix of city and country roads. Keep it around 65 or below and you'll be good.

Now that warm weather is here again, I'm finally getting in the 15-17mpg/tank range again. From Thanksgiving through March I only got 15mpg+ once. I had 8 fillups in a row in the middle of winter where I got LESS than 13.5mpg/tank.

new record low was 12.2mpg, from a 2week period where the temperature never broke ~20deg F, and we were driving in several inches of fresh snow in 4WD every day.

To date I still haven't seen 20mpg, even once.

    I think I said 65 ..

And yea, I'm at 380 now on this tank, no light, half-way between 1/4 and E. I'll fill up when I get home, which is another 35-40 miles. My first fill up was on E, a few miles after the light came on and it took 18.5 gallons. If it takes the 18.5 again then 420/18.5 = 22.7, right? If takes 19 then 22.1 and at 19.5, 21.5.

"They way a modern car can not use any fuel while coasting is that the drive train will keep the engine turning. It the forward momentum of the car, through the trannie will also supply the power needed to keep the alternator, AC, Power steering, water pump, and any other equipment running without using and fuel.

How this is implemented can vary car to car, but on average, if the car is going sufficiently fast enough (>25-30) and there is no input from the gas pedal, the car will go into coasting mode where the fuel injectors are shut off. Once the driver steps on the gas, it instantly goes back into driving mode and the injectors are turned back on. This has been fairly standard on car in the US for 5-10 years now. I believe that it has been used in Europe for over 15 years."

All kinds of write-ups about it including car makers. My summary of "tire spin" was not adequate, sorry lol.

Ummm... the same way the engine running keeps the wheels spinning? :notsure:

Engine and transmission are linked. If you let off the gas in a manual it doesn't uncouple the engine from the transmission now does it? That only happens when you push in the clutch or shift out of gear.

You ever bump/push start a manual? Turn the key to ON, put it in neutral, push or roll it down a hill, and pop it in gear. Lets you start a manual with a dead battery.

Automatics might be a bit trickier.

I average 22-24mpg on the highway. Checkout my fuelly profile for more details (I write notes about each tank I go through). I filled up this morning and at 417.5 miles with 24.4 mpg.

*Note: I drive an 05 access cab, 4x4 auto.

I may have touched 20mpg once. Average is usually 18.7-19mpg in mixed (mostly highway) driving. DCSB 4X4 OR. I got 19.1 on my last 2 fillups after the 3" lift. I'm happy with it.

Agree with most posters.... I get an honest 21 or so with pure highway driving if I keep speed in the 60-65 mph range.
