I would have gotten a SR5 4x4, but I find the TRD seats to be attractive and much more comfortable.

JLee: Do you even have a new style Tacoma? Looks like you have the old style which I do really like, but this guy is looking to buy a new style Tacoma. The Tacoma Sport suspension is junk!

I replaced it with Old Man Emu / Dakar suspension. Which means the only other items the sport had like the matching front bumper (I replaced with ARB) the rear bumper (I'm replacing with an aftermarket custom bumper) I do like the Hood!

Maybe but I'm not saying I'm a extream 4 wheeler, my truck is my work truck. I go off road a a couple of times and I do just fine. But I do know some tw members that have sports that go extream 4wheeling and don't complain. I haven't driven a OR so I can't coment but from what this guy wants to use it for I think its the best choice

I would say go with the Off Road. If you do light camping and dont need the OR then get the Sport. I guess it depends on how you plan on using your truck. Either way both trucks are very nice.

Don't listen to us... get what you want based on what you want to do with your truck.

Do you want your truck to look like it is a street racer with matching colored trim and a fake hood scoop... like a sport car... but it is a sport truck?

Do you want it to come from the factory ready to seriously four wheel with A-TRAC and a locking differential? Or, do you want to spend thousands more on after market lockers so it can do what the Off Road can do from the start?

YOU DECIDE! A SPORT truck or an OFF ROAD truck... the name says it all!

They're pretty much the same price, right? So why wouldn't you go with the package with the most meat for the money? I mean the Sport is nice, but the OR has way more bang for the buck. If they're the same price up front, I'd trade the 17" wheels and hood scoop for progressive rate springs, a locker and A-TRAC any day.

But as others have said, if you need a DC longbed for the bike, then Sport is really the only choice .. or SR5 if you want to build. And then you need a locker you can always add onboard air & and ARB for a couple grand.

    I know he's talking about a 2nd Gen they don't even make a 1st Gen sport.
And I'm not saying the sports can't wheel but the ones that wheel with us are the first ones to have problems making up hill climbs and over rocks. The locker is a big + in my book.

I can't really see a unlocked truck doing a extreme trail. When I think extreme I think the Rubicon and other class 10 trails that you can't do without lockers well i guess if you had a winch you could get just about anywhere. but anything more then a class 5 and you will have problems without a locker. And i think anyone else that wheels there truck would say the same.

The problem with these Sport vs Offroad threads is by about page 2 nobody has even read the OP's question about what he needs the truck for and it becomes the same old pissing match

There was no 1st gen. sport... TRD back then meant only one thing: OFF ROAD. Sport TRD was a successful marketing gimmick by Toyota starting in 2005 to sell their trucks to people who wanted a sports car look... hood scoop (even though it doesn't scoop anything into the engine, color matched trim, etc. All things for looks and not function to help the truck move forward.

My beef isn't with any Sport owners, it is with the salesmen who either push the Sport and/ or don't explain the difference or advantages of the Off Road (in order to sell more Sports). In 2005, when I was shopping for my second Tacoma, I was told by the first salesman that the rear locker was discontinued and replaced by the limited slip differential (a lie)... then he had me drive the Sport... and that stupid hood scoop was the first problem I noticed because I do some seriously steep off roading and seeing more (not less) in front of the truck is critical.

I changed salesman, saw the 2005 Off Road, saw that it still had the locker (like my '01), and got it. The 2010 is many time better with the A-TRAC device making the front and rear into automatic locking differentials with spin sensors on each wheel and the hydraulic brake booster to match tire rotation across an axle (as a locker does). The Sport only has a vacuum brake booster, as it doesn't have A-TRAC.

Sure, it is a bummer if you need a long bed double cab... as the Off Road isn't available in a long bed DC. If that is the case, I suggest an SR-5/ base and add a rear locker.... That is if the OP wants a 4WD that can go beyond most others, or not get stuck too easily!
