    Hi all!
Changed my diff fluids (front & rear) with M1 75W90 synth gear lube, and the rear diff took a good 3.5 quarts (instead of 3 as the manual says) until it came out of the fill hole.
Anybody else seen this? Or do I have a bigger diff than all of you? ;)

Your only supposed to put in 3 quarts. Too much oil can cause the fluid to cavitate, and thus cause the gears to over heat.

It happened to a friend of mine. On top of that, most people that know diffs, and lubrication will tell ya the same thing. IIRC, the FSM states not to over fill the diff because of it potentially over heating.

    another post on this issue:

Some have also reported that oil can get into the breather, blocking it, and causing the axel seals to blow out....

What happened in your friends case? I thought you are supposed to fill it until it starts sipping out of the fill hole. That's what I did. It was sure more than 3 quarts though.

He over filled the diff, and burt up the gears.

So basically you are not supposed to fill it until it starts coming out of the fill hole?

    The FSM states 3 quarts.

Some engines can be over filled in which the crank then hits the oil. Mostly older domestic engines however.

I just went back and checked: there is 0.8qts left in bottle number 6, which means I used a total of 5.2qts instead of the recommended 4.6qts (=3.0+1.6) for both diffs. You guys think I should drain some out of it?
My guess is that I used 3.4qts in the rear and 1.8qts in the front. Minus a little bit that of course came out before I got the plug back in.
    Reason for concern?

Thanks whipper, that was pretty cool.
So bottom line is? Drain some or leave it? What would you do?
