Is This A Good Deal?

    Hi Guys,

I'm in the market for a Tacoma and came across this deal from a dealership:

    2010 Toyota Tacoma
    43,xxx miles
    TRD Sport
    Double Cab
    4x4
    Black exterior, grey interior
    Manual transmission
    Rear View Camera
    The asking price is $21,898

The problem is that the car is located 800 miles away. I'm flying to pick up my fiance in that state and we're driving home to L.A. I would have to pick up the truck and driving it home while my fiance drives her SUV home.

    My two questions are:

Is it a good deal for the price?
Would it be safe to buy a truck in another state and drive it home (800 miles away)?

Thanks, any info/suggestions would be definitely appreciated!

I'd say that's a pretty good price. But what's the deal with CA emissions and bringing in vehicles from out of state?

Nothing really. I'm looking at price and with sales tax almost 10% here in CA, thought it'd be cheaper to pick one up out of state. Utah's sales tax is a shade under 7%. Plus it seems like Tacomas are a lot cheaper outside of CA.

you can easily get that truck NEW at invoice which with those options it's 28k even.
now let's say previous owner bought it in late 2009, it's still not even 2 years old and 43k miles, new car warranty is already up, still have drivetrain though.
the good thing is they did a lot of miles, so mostly will be hwy miles unless they towed then not easy miles anymore ;p

check out truecar.com for prices in your area and negotiate better either for the used one or a new one...

ps: just 2 cents to think about

Is it at a Toyota dealer? If so, get them to throw in a genuine Toyota 7yr/100k mile warranty. Then it's a great deal.

Sounds like a great deal, but before you walk away with it make sure and ask if it is a perfectly clear title. Sometimes things can happen to a car and people just try to pawn 'em off cheap to a sucker. You never know.

So you're planning on leaving it registered in Utah? If CA is like most states they'll charge you the difference in sales tax when you register.

That's an unbelievable price. Around here that truck would list for 26 or 27k easy.

It was probably bought in the later half of '09 so it could be two years old.

Appraise it on http://www.edmunds.com/ Depending on the condition I can make it fall down to about $15,000. The high miles alone knock $1400 off the value. They might have been driving it 100-200 miles every day. Probably a commercial truck.

The great thing about buying new, isn't the new car smell. It's that nobody has had the chance to ruin it yet.

I wouldnt touch it personally... 43,000 miles on a 1 year old truck. HOLY SHIT! Was this guy cross country treking??? In all honesty I would gladly pay more for a lower milage vehicle.

Tacoma's are one of the few vehicles I will buy new because they hold thier value so well. Remember the phrase "buyer beware!" That low of a price, and that high of a milage are usually a red flag for me. It could have been a corporate or a rental and I would not walk but RUN away from those. I know what I do to corporate and rental cars so... Ever seen the scene in days of thunder with the rental cars.. Yea, thats what I am talking about...

It would have to be a total non optioned P.O.S. to get it down to $15k. It's a double cab TRD Sport 4x4 not a 2wd regular cab.

OK, 2 year old truck, even then it has almost twice as many miles as its supposed to.

I would also be careful with the whole out of state sale tax thing. Some states can and will charge you sales tax (sometimes again, sometimes anything extra you should have paid) once you register it in that state. Washington state does this if you buy a vehicle in Oregon and register it in Washington. It wouldnt suprise me if california did the same or even worse to get there cut of it.

I paid an arm and a leg for tax on motorcycle I bought while in California. Unless I wanted to have it shipped to my local dealer, I had to do it if I wanted to ride the bike. I would call and double check the rules with out of state vehicle purchases and then registration in your state.
