I want to lift but worried about gas millage and CV joins.

I have had a pair of 884's and 1/2" spacers for my truck and was going to lift it. Then I bought a camper last month and found that it sucks a lot of fuel from 18 miles per gallon to around 11 miles per gallon. The camper weighs 3200 lbs empty and 5900 lbs gross. I still love the look of a 3" lifted Taco.

So help me, give me some info of what I can do and should do

 

Adding a lift won't affect your gas mileage , that comes with bigger tires

 

I added a 3 inch lift to my 2010. These fine folks are correct, the lift won't affect your gas mileage. The larger tires and rims that inevitably come after the lift will affect your gas mileage. Not nearly as bad as that camper though! I went with a 265/70/17 on a set of XD Revolvers and with the BFG TA/KO's being a good bit heavier then the rugged trails that came on the truck, I did take a minor hit in the MPG's. Definitely nothing bad enough to make me regret lifting my truck!

As far as cv angles, stay at 3" or less and you will be ok. As far as mileage goes like everyone said just the tires will kill it. I run 285/75/16 duratracs load range E so they are heavy as hell and I lost about 3-4mpg.

 

I'm running lift with 265/75/16 duratracs and my mpgs are exactly the same as before the lift back when I was running BFG rugged trails.

 

Did you compensate your calculations for the larger tire size since the speedo will be reading different?

Anyone know how to calculate for the difference? I'd like to know too.

 

Who cares, your warranty will last longer if you don't. My error is usually .1m I just did a trip across the country and was blown away that I was gettin almost 19.5mpg on my BFGs! I'm usually 17.5 city.



If you really want to calculate the error, the math is elementary... pi * diameter Formula for the circumference of a circle. Divide the two and you get your error. I figured out my error by driving a few miles and comparing GPS to odometer.

My trip guage usually says I'm gettin 270 miles to the tank, but in reality i'm getting closer to 300.

 

Many people have reported that after bumping up to the next tire size up from stock (265/75R16 or 265/70R17) that their speedo actually evens out to be correct. Comparing my speedometer readings to my GPS shows that I'm actually travelling 2-3MPH slower than the truck's speedometer reads. So bumping up one tire size will mostly even it out to be accurate. I can vouch for this too. I went up a size from the stock 16 inch to 17 inch and my speedometer is dead on according to the gps and my incredibly helpful fort worth police officer neighbor!

 

i put a 3" lift on mine and bigger tires and I drive a lot and I honestly didnt see a difference in my gas mileage... now if i get into it all the time yeah you can watch the gas gauge drop haha

Just kidding but really that happened with a 3" lift well a little more but going over 3" will cause your CV boots to fail if the fins are touching. Just keep that in mind. But it's not that bad you will just have to swap out your axles every year or so.

 

i wouldn't worry about your cv joints, i've got over 20k miles on mine with no problem. And a lift won't hurt your gas milesage, bigger tires will
