Me and Grif came back from a trip up to Long Canyon trail and got almost to the first obstacle but due to a huge tree blocking the path, we were no longer able to continue. For those who went snow wheeling on the 4th, most if not all the snow is gone as far as we have seen. I will be wheeling with the group this coming weekend at Eagle Lake but will be heading back to Long Canyon sunday in hopes of getting through the whole trail. But having some helping hands or chainsaws will be great. I think Grif might come with me but I am unsure. Anyone with information, advice or those interested let me know. Long Canyon trail is located near Kyburz, CA off hwy50.

I'd be careful about cutting it down if it isn't your land. Land management nowadays are extremely strict about that kinda thing. Unless you mean a dead tree that's laying in the trail?

How big is the tree? If it's big enough, I'll make the trip up there to cut it up and load up on firewood. I have to get started soon on firewood cutting anyway, and I already have my permits. I just checked the map and we only cross private property near the bottom (before we even hit the big patch of snow last time), so it'll be legal to cut and haul it.

    EDIT:
I reread your post and you mentioned "Huge" tree. It has to be small enough that I can lift the rounds into the bed of the truck (I ran into that problem last year when we had to quit cutting some trees because the rounds were just too heavy to lift).

If both Seth and I are there we might be able to cut it in sections and winch it out of the way.

We're now thinking of going up there Saturday and just spending the whole weekend cutting firewood (since I have to take the tonneau off anyway). I'd still like to hear from Cha how big it is. But if we take care of it Saturday, I'll post back here to save you guys the trip.

I assume the road it's on is the fork to the right just above where Jerry's topper was almost against that tree?

Its about 35 inches around. I though Cha had a pic of it. Probably a two man lift if you cut it into rounds.

35 inches around (circumference) or diameter? If circumference, then that's doable. We can usually lift a round if it's less than 24 inches in diameter. At least we could last summer. It may be iffy this year since my wife broke her ribs in January (takes a couple of years to really heal). I won't risk her re-breaking them.

But a picture would be good.:D

If it's really big, I can always time it to meet you guys up there at a certain time. After I cut the rounds, you could help me throw them in the back of my truck (if that works for you). Usually, it only takes no more than 5 minutes to load it up when the rounds are big.

Grif and I thought about just that but no rocks big enough to stack with. Will post pictures when I get home. Looks like DWH from NorcalFJ will be bringing his chainsaw and be helping out as well.

I'll check it out on Friday and let you guys know.

Am I correct in that I take the fork to the right just above where Jerry's truck was leaning toward the tree (this pic):

Yeah but there will be a left, followed by a right and another right after that, you will make a left at next intersection with a right just after the left turn. You should encounter a tight spot which can get tippy. Follow that until you come to another intersection and go right then immediately left. You will have to squeeze between two rocks. Looks deceiving, but be careful cause damage can and has happen without care. After squeezing thru you will eventually run into the tree, I think. LOL...;):D I think you should just wait for us.

Mr Toad' wild ride, huh? Will I make it back out if I'm loaded with the rounds? LOL

Pictures are just as hard to tell how big a tree is just like looking at it from a distance. I've learned that even seeing a tree that looks too small or just right from a 100 feet away is usually a lot bigger up close. That tree in the pic does look huge if I take that experience and apply it here. But if I can get here and back without too many problems, I'm sure the top of that tree is probably doable. Looks like a tall sugar pine.

    Travis, you interested?
