taping under dash

It dosent always happen but every now and then there is a tapping from under my dash, it will usually happen at around 50-70 mph. i just cant locate the exact spot when im driving. Its a 02 double cab V6 TRD prerunner , automatic. any ideas?

But, seriously, look for loose hoses, wires, trim, fenders, flaps, etc.

 

The truck had a trailer brake controller installed in it when i got it could that have anything to do with it

 

Funny! I think I have the same problem. Mine sounds like rats climbing around in the dash. I would like to think it's a rattle with bumps, etc, but it seems it just does it at highway speeds. Of course, there are many other rattles, but that one is the most aggravating!

 

Does your speedo jump around also? Might be the speedo cable. Had that problem in my old truck before the cable broke

 

a mouse under the dash would be exactly how i would describe it, I dont have any speedo jump and i was thinking the cable. Its very weird

 

I think there's a motor of some sort on the passenger side that people have tightened the bolts on that have gotten rid of dash rattles. I would try that out. Where at around the dash is the noise specifically coming from?

 

i have a similar issue. it likes my keys are hitting the plastic panel, but if i hold the keys while i'm driving, the tapping is still present. i'm pretty sure it's something loose under there, but i'm haven't had time to take things apart to investigate.

 

Steech, is yours on the passenger side? Mine is. Only does it at highway speeds. Kmok, do you know what motor it is that needs tightening?

 

mine is just like scwerks sounds like the keys hitting but when i hold the keys or just have ignition key in, it is still there. it sounds like its right under the dash on the bottom center or just to the right a bit around the ignition switch

 

Mine makes a clicking sound from the airbag on the passenger side. Not the airbag itself but like the cover slightly moving in the separation around it. If i wedge my finger in the crack it stops.

 

I wish i could stop it, some times i just want to kick the dash, but i know that will do nothing but break something else, and ill have to fix that!.... I would just like the tapping to stop.

 

lol, i'm constantly driving with one hand resting on something trying to locate the loose part. i think the only way to find out is to actually take everything apart around the dash area.

 

I had the same problem. Ended up finding that the rubber "engine guard" attached to the lower edge of the driverside front inner wheelwell had come loose and the free end was flapping around, hitting the fire wall. Some of the plastic "panel rivets" had come out. Got new ones from the stealer, popped them in, no more noise.

 

^^^ This! Same happened to me and I sware it was inside the dash. I wasn't even missing any rivets. They simply become loose and with enough wind going over the rubber at highway speeds it makes the rivets clickity clack. I went to home depot and got some half inch self tapping screws with rubber washers and the tightened the flaps down. Good to go!

 

I am going to check it out, cuz that sounds logical to me

 

ok so the splash guard was off at 1 part it was ripped the plastic rivet was their but the rubber was torn. I think this is a job for the magical tool duct tape..lol will let you know if it works

 

Hope it works for you. Havent found mine yet. I opened the glove box driving yesterday and the noise got louder. Im gonna have to get behind the glove box and chase mine down.

Duct tape won't hold up. The rubber glue hardens, and the vinyl backing separates. You'd be better off with staples, riveting in a repair piece, or a new guard.
