Glock and SA XD

This is not a post asking for pistol recommendations.

For those of you that have owned and used both Glock and Springfield XD's extensively. Which one did you choose in the end?

Now I'm NOT asking people who just shot them side by side at the range once or twice. Or that have only owned one and not the other. If one of them was or is your only pistol I do not want to hear from you either. Only guys or gals that have owned BOTH and decided on keeping/using one over the other.

Please list your reasonings as I am very curious.

The glock's slide is about 1/16" thinner than the XD, and the XD's grip does not have finger indentations in it while the glock does. The XD's field stripping/takedown is a little easier too, the glock's is sort of a PITA at first until you get the hang of it.

I think the biggest thing is those finger-notches though. Go to a gun shop and hold each one, see which one is more comfortable in your hand. Other than that, there isn't much of a difference at all.

 

I have both of them, SAXD 45 and Glock 26 Gen 4. I like that the Glock is able to fully breakdown, the XD has the roll pins so it is very difficult to breakdown and do a detailed clean or maintenance. Both of them have night sights that I installed myself and zeroed at 7yards. I shoot well with both of them, everyone complains about the difference with grip angles but you should be proficient with any weapon handed to you. That being said I prefer the Glock. It feels more balanced in my hand and easier to manipulate the controls.

 

I will list the models of each brand I have owned to give you a good example of my knowledge base and experience with each. The below pistols I have owned and put a minimum of 2k rounds through each in trial and testing. I like to take, when possible, a handgun training class with each new pistol I buy. That way you really get to ring the pistol out by using high round counts and reload drills, malfunction drills, presentations, blah blah…You get the idea.

I chose Glock.

Here is MY experience and findings that may or may not correspond to you, given your situation and mindset that led me to choose the Glock platform over the Springfield.

The Glock is easily maintained with one simple punch. No roll pins. Glock has less springs and moving parts than an XD. The Glock does NOT have features, this is one of the reasons I like it, rugged simplicity. In all pistols (XD and Glock) in the given caliber share the same magazine. The trigger can be set up in myriad of weight setting and be adjusted for take up depending on your style of shooting and carry method. One handed drills are much easier for me in strange positions with the Glock than the XD series.

more parts available

SA XD
better SS magazines than plastic Glock mags
better grip and grip angle (my opinion)

You should really shoot both to see which is right for you. Do you have a range that rents guns near you?

 

See both my posts. I've had multiple of both. Just wanted to see peoples opinions who have had both and why they choose.

How do you figure the XD mags are superior? I have never seen either one break. So I'd assume they're near the same quailty and durability wise. Also, Glock mags are metal lined FYI.

 

That must be fairly new. All of the old Glock mags were just plastic which is inferior to steel.

 

check out the S&W M&P line also....it fits my hand way better than the xd or glock...

Most gun guys will have/had both. I have an XD9 4" service and a Glock 19, which are pretty analagous models. The XD is my bedside gun and the G19 goes with me every day. I don't feel undergunned with either.

I like the XD trigger better, it's lighter and smoother. I can run a rack of plates at 15 yds pretty darn quick. The G19 carries better due to the rake and less "bulkiness", so it's my carry gun. I'm plenty confident with it on silhouettes out to 25 yds.

 

I bought a G17 about a year and a half ago. I love it!! I looked into gettin another polymer pistol about six months ago and went with the S&W M&P 45. Prolly a month ago I shot a XD compact in 40 my buddy bought and it just felt real uncomfortable in my hand.

I Would prefer my Glock over any polymer pistol out there. Bulky to conceal in the hotter months so I got a Airweight and love it to.

If your buddys have pistol see if they will let you shoot or if the local gun range rents pistol or however they do it (Never been to a public range other than skeet). What ever feels best in your hand is goin o be the one you would prefer. Unless you just want it for looks, get a DE 50AE

I prefer my XD9 over Glock 40. My only reason is comfort and hand fitiment. Other than that i'm content. Granted I don't put as many rounds through each gun or break them down as often as some, those are my plain and simple reasons for my choice.

 

I have a Glock 23 and 22 and 26. I carried a 22 on duty back in the day and shot it extensively. I carried the 23 OD and got used it it as well. Both are great shooters. I also have a XD9 as well as 40 and 45. I shoot the Glock better as it fits my hand better and I have more round counts through them. The thing I do like better is the XD trigger, it's wider than the Glock and its a bit smoother in my opinion. Field stripping the XD is easier with the throw down lever but both come apart fairly easy.

As others have said, go out and get them in your hand. See which one feels better and which one points better for you. If neither fit your hand well and don't point well, you should look at other options. Guns are like shoes, if they don't fit, you'll never wear them.

I recently got the opportunity to shoot the S&W MP line and thought it felt and shot well. I also recently got to run a few mags through a FN FNX and FNP 40, both shot well too and pointing them was easier with the FNX with the larger sights.

I'm also a fan of the Beretta 92/96 line, a little larger fit in my hands and much heavier but the sights come up easy for me and you can't beat the double action trigger pull out of the box, smooth as silk.

 

Guys, please read my first post. This is not a recomendation thread. It's for owners and users of both the Glock and XD platforms. Other pistols can be discussed in another thread.

G21 and an XD .45 standard, here.

I liked both for a while until I found myself shooting the XD more. Shooting custom loaded ammo out of each, I noticed a whole world of difference from both pistols, compared below:

Glock thoughts . . .
- Grip angled too far forward, but finger indents were nice, fit well in the hand
- Sure was cheaper
- Parts cost more to do a carry trigger
- Firing mechanism is unusual, at best
- Easy to clean if you ever really need to
- FTF and FTE issues after 4000 rds, still, every once in a while

XD thoughts . . .
- Grip was nice, but added a Hogue and made a world of difference
- Combat trigger job was done for 1/8th the cost of a carry on the Glock
- People mistake it for a Glock all the time, n00bs
- Less user intervention to control/recover sight picture after round leaves the chamber (recoil is smoother)
- Priced a bit higher, but SA has sold me on several guns in the past

Those are the things that stand out in my mind. Both are good pistols IMO, but take it as opinion and not advice.

FWIW, I have 8000 rds through both, and I haven't had to replace any parts yet that aren't serious wear items. I have a feeling, though, that the Glock will enter "self-destruct mode" soon.

G23 + 9mm conversion barrel and XD40 compact... Kept my Kimber ultra-carry II 1911.

Glock - CC'd this one for the last 8 mos I lived in WA. Once I bought and started shooting the 1911 I just couldn't go back to the glock with it's grip angle. Nothing wrong with the gun at all but the 1911 pointed much more naturally. Probably 2k rounds before I sold it.

XD - someone earlier mentioned the trigger. It SUCKS! One of the longest pulls and resets. IIRC the trigger is one of the biggest complaints about it and a trigger job is definitely in order. The other issue I had was the height of the receiver and barrel, I just didnt like the way it recoiled with all that weight that high above my hand. <500 rounds before I said adios.

Otherwise both did what they were supposed to and did it well.
