Speaker thoughts

I'm looking at replacing my front door speakers and wanted to know what you guys thought of theses speakers http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113KFC6882/Kenwood-KFC-C6882ie.html?tp=92. The reviews look good and the specs look good but I've mostly gotten sony stuff and dont know much about kenwood(they seem like a reputable brand). I was also looking at http://www.crutchfield.com/p_158GT5725A/Sony-GT5725A.html?tp=92. Cant decide between the two...the kenwood specs look better but I've had sony before and like their product...Any thoughts/opinions/experiences would be great.

 

If that is the price point that you are wanting to hit, I would recommend going to an electronics store that sells car audio stuff and finding those speakers and listening to them. Let your ears decide which sound the best to you. The price difference is pretty negligible, so it is your just your ears that matter in this decision.

The better option, IMO, would be look forgo the 6x9's all together and go with a set of 6.5" components.

 

whats the difference between 6x8s and 6.5" component speakers? I know how to wire stuff up up just dont know a ton about what the speaker sizes do.

 

Ok i just looked on crutchfield for 6.5" speakers and none of them fit my front door.

 

dont do sony, I use to sell speakers at circuit city and they were all junk. I just looked on crutchfield and there is a set of infinitys on there that are pretty decent and imo would sound way better than any sony. I cant compare them to kenwood though since ive never listend to them before. Kickers are also very good

 

Ok I also found these...http://www.crutchfield.com/p_109GTO8627/JBL-Grand-Touring-Series-GTO8627.html?tp=105. They dont fit the front door but fit the back speakers in the xtra cab. Its the same size as the front door(6x8) and idk why they dont fit. I found these for cheaper on another site and I like the quality of JBL I have a 8" JBL sub in the back that sounds great and my mom has the JBL sound system in her sequoia and that sounds great also. Any reason why these wouldnt fit but other 6x8s do fit?

 

The mounting depth may be to deep? idk. but personally I would go with some alpines or pioneer or infinity over jbl's

 

Can't speak specifically on those as I've never listened to them myself but I can tell you "specs" do not tell the whole story

Excellent advice IMO.

6x8's, 5x7 and 6x9 are oval speakers and when you see a single number such as 6.5 it is a round speaker
edit: component speakers mean the mid and tweeter are separate and usually have an external passive crossover

I may have missed it but what year truck do you have?

To fit any aftermarket speaker you will need the proper baffle/adapter however there are limitations. As soon as I find out what year truck you have I can expand on that.

 

6x8's are an oblong shaped speaker (6" wide at the narrow axis and 8" at the long axis). Typically they will be a full range speaker, meaning it will play all frequencies from one speaker structure or they will be a 2, 3 or 4 way, meaning there are separate tweeters mounted to the one main driver assembly. The 2, 3, or 4 way denotes the number of discrete drivers ( 1 main 6x8 and a tweeter would be a 2 way system). Typically they will include a capacitor wired inline with the tweeter to act as a bass blocker (removing much of the lower frequencies from the amplified sound signal coming into the speaker). 6.5" and other sizes are also commonly produced in this configuration. This method is a cheaper and more simplistic way to build a speaker, but is not the most effective for high quality sound reproduction.

Component sets have separate discrete drivers for different sound frequencies and are generally paired up with crossover. The crossover separates the amplified line level signal (signal from the speaker wire) and sends it to the seperate drivers (the larger woofer and the smaller tweeter). The seperate signals are then adjusted by cutting out the high frequencies from going to the woofer and the bass frequencies from the tweeters. Component sets are also typically made with better quality materials and higher quality control standards.

I do not find them any more difficult to install, it is just a couple more connections and is just another wire run from the crossover to the seperate tweeter and woofer.

The issue is most likely mounting depth. I didn't do any investigating to support this, but that would be the typical issue with the same diameter speakers not fitting in the same spot.

 

OK I just realized if you drag the mouse over the box below your screen name it tells me the year of your truck. Pre 2005's are very limited as far as what you can fit without modification. In order to fit a 6.5 you will need to do some surgery to the door metal as well as the inner door panel. If you want to "keep it simple" my suggestion would be to get a set of 5 1/4" components with the proper baffle/adapter as shown below.

That might be the case, but I am not pulling from decades of experience. I figure your slowness in typing is due to the deep and broad extent of your knowledge and the processing it takes to refine it so that us amateurs can comprehend what you are saying.

I have the 6.5" kenwoods, let me tell you these are clarity coaxials. I went to a shop that had them on demo, they were better sound quality than some top brand speakers one of them were Diamond audio. You will not be dissapointed. Are you adding an amp or straight of the stereo deck?

 

When I do get speakers I will probably add them to head unit so my sub can have more power from my amp.

 

Now see, I think completely different. My buddy is selling his car, and replaced his set of Morels with Kenwoods. I also listened to Kenwoods on a sound wall in the stereo store. In both instances, in my opinion, the Kenwoods tend to overemphasize bass and remind me of the reverberation of the garbage truck in the morning.

So there you go OP, very drastically different opinions. Does that make the speakers outright horrible? Not necessarily. You need to listen and decide yourself.

 

sony would be more like an entry level brand.... fantastic for replacing stock speakers but they do not have the engineering that the mainstream brands do(kicker,kenwood,alpine,diamond audio,rockford fosgate) im not going to lie i bought a $20 set of roadmaster coaxes to go behind my seats while i have $400 diamond audio components with crossovers in my doors. the roadmasters sound fine but its not as clean as a more expensive speaker would be.....
