i have a 07 prerunner db and was wondering if its a great idea to remove the secondary air filter (charcoal filter) for the v6.... saw a couple of threads and the most noticeable change was the better throttle response and some mpg gain (and the sound?)..would it damage the engine in the long run? sorry for repeating the same thread and thanks

Most of that was on the 4 cylinder ones. The v6 posts I read were pretty much no difference. Even on the 4 it might be more placebo than anything else. I'm probably hopin it helped more than it actually did on my 4 cyl.

Pretty much everything I've read says what T@co said. V6 - Charcoal Filter = SWF.

I did it on my 4 banger and might be getting 1/2mpg better and a slight more throttle response. Like you said though it might just be placebo. I haven't seen anyone use legitimate dyno'ed results to back up their claims of HP and MPG gains yet so its all opinion at the moment.

From what I've heard, the v6 'gains' are even less noticeable.

As far as damage to the engine, there isn't any. The charcoal filter is 100% useless and protects nothing.

I'll say this I timed my truck 0-60 before and after. I can't remember the time but it was what I would call a **** hair faster. I made 3 runs before and 3 runs after. The time is somewhere on this site.

They say that it also captures gas fumes coming out of the engine..is this correct? and also do I need to replace the main filter if ever I remove the charcoal filter?

I'd just check the main filter every so often and replace as needed.

If you're really careful, you can wash and resuse them. I did.

Wouldn't see enough of a difference to give a damn so I left mine alone...all the threads that I've read that have to do with the V6 said it was pointless. I just bought a AFE Pro Dry S Air Filter and called it a day :)
