2000 3.4 TRD 5spd, 108k. Today in the taco bell drivethru, I heard a new noise reflecting back off the building, a metallic "toktoktok.....toktok." It would pause every now and then, not 100% consistent. It's at engine speed, not valve speed, and it only happens when the motor is warm. I drug my clutch down to put a load on it, and it got louder, even after i put it back in neutral. When I crawled underneath, it sounds like it's coming from the rear of the block, loudest underneath. I couldn't record it, i picked up too much other engine noise. It's not terribly loud (yet), but noticeable if you are paranoid like me.

Sadly, that's not it. Sounds like its coming from low, back near the trans.

Your engine is shot. Time to trade the truck in.

No seriously, what you are describing is called the "Taco Tick" and almost all of us have it. It's completely normal.

I think Chris4x4 posted a fix with some rubber washers that has worked for some people. Search for that.

That would be for 2nd gen trucks featuring the 4.0L V6. The OP very much has a first gen. Furthermore, I believe he is correct in this being an abnormal noise.

Sounds like a rod knock, which you should have take care of immediately. You'll have to take it in to get a better opinion. We are only guessing.

I put Heet in the tank, and it has stopped, at least for today. I'm going to wait and see, doesn't seem loud enough to be a rod, can't hear it in the cab. Have to hang your head low out the window when it's quiet out. Think it might be spark knock or a small header leak? Only does it when hot. Also, only started doing it right after I replaced the rack, and the entire underside of the truck pretty much got soaked with Blaster/kroil.
