Front differential TSB coming soon??

For those of you with trucks beyond the 60mo/60K mi Toyota Powertrain Warranty, I seriously doubt whether the stealer would do the TSB without charge.

There should be no question that the needle bearing in question is a defective part, but Toyota doesn't want to pay labor to update everybody's truck out there, so they issue a TSB with an updated part. (A TSB is not a recall). Any owner who complains about the problem and is under warranty should get the updated part.

I don't see any new TSB's published in TIS yet...

 

Get em to the dealer now. The more documented complaints, the better.

 

wahhh wahhh wahhh. u dont like ur truck with all the tsbs not being covered, everything expiring, u having to pay for repairs out of pocket, asshole's bleeding, no more warranty stop complaining. get a new truck from somewhere else.

I thought that. Bought one on my wife's 2005 Subaru & never had a problem. LOL that was until 8 months and 10k miles before the 7yr/105k warranty expired. She had a total meltdown ... valve guides dropped into cylinders. Required a complete teardown, recondition, and brand new heads. Overall that $1200 warranty saved us about $4500 between the 2 times we had it in there (head failures caused a cascade of sensor failures). Damn glad we bought it now! Will buy one on the truck before the 3yr/36k is up.

 

I got the 6yr/60k warranty. I bought my truck new April 2010, and have 25,5-- on it now. That warranty will be up quick!

 

As with any warranty, there are isolated cases where this specific warranty pays back, like in your case.
If you, on the other hand, never buy any extended warranties and save that money there is a 99.9% chance that you'll come out ahead, even with the $4,500 cost like in your case. If you now continue buying extended warranties on everything, you are set up to pay way more over time.
There is a reason why these warranties are pushed so hard everywhere. They are a cash cow, and not for you.

BTW, would you have found a way to get things done for less than $4,500 if you would not have had the warranty? I bet you would ...

I was denied a diff bearing replacement under warranty due to my Bili5100's set @ 2.5. 3 trips to the dealer and multiple requests to speak to the territory rep who denied the claim got me nowhere. $800 for the needle bearing replacement. Toyota is not very high on my list right now....

 

Document everything and initiate the arbitration process. Chances are that you will win and you will be refunded your $800. They have to prove that your lift caused it and they're not going to be able to do that I suspect. Not to long ago a member here won in arbitration on a rear diff replacement.

 

And I'm one of them. Some have had their differentials replaced 3 times before they got one that lasted. Some have had them go bad before 20K miles without a lift. I'll still be surprised if they really do come out with a TSB. The first front diff replacements began back in 2006 and 5 years later they're going to come out with a TSB? We'll see if it really happens. Too bad it wouldn't be a recall, then I'd get a refund.

 

I agree. I don't think the TSB will happen. I have yet to fix b/c it's not getting any worse that I can tell... Hopefully the TSB does come out and I drop my truck to stock and bring it in

My front diff is making noises for the past 20k miles but it is not constant. There is no consistency at all. Sometimes it can go for a days without making noises. Sometimes it will make noises in the morning on the way to work and no noise in the afternoon on the way home from work. Sometimes it's the other way around, no noise in the morning but noise in the afternoon. I brought it to the dealer and it's hard for them to duplicate due to the inconsistency.

I did some research and the bearing and seal are pretty cheap, about $20. It is relatively an easy job if you know how to use the right tools. I'm going to replace the bearing when I have time in a couple of months.

 

I don't really notice a noise but I have a bad vibe in the steering wheel that is very inconsistent, much like the noise inconsistency you are describing. Do you think my steering wheel vibe is related to the front diff problem?

 

Mine is worse when its cold. In 100+ heat I can barely notice it.

 

If you put it in 4hi and it goes away, then it's your front diff. If not, then something else is wrong.

When mine does make noises it goes away when I put it in 4hi.

 

When I originally took my truck in, they indicated that it was nothing more than tire noise. I asked to have the tech ride along and he noticed it instantly. You have to let them get a feeling for the ride in 2hi and then switch into 4hi. Repeat this as many times as necessary. I think the front differential TSB for the Tundra lists the exact same symptoms except for maybe a different MPH range.
