    Hey guys!
Is there a writeup (with pictures) on the 6 speed manual transmission oil change? Got my MT-90 75W90 GL-4 gear oil lined up to go in. I did search, but all I could find was a writeup for the 4 cylinder, not the 6.
It looks pretty straight forward to me, but if there is a writeup, it may be the smart thing to do to read that first. :)

Thanks a lot for any pointers!

My guess is that it's probably very similar to the other manual transmissions.

Park on level ground. Take out the fill plug on the side. Then take out the drain plug (should be towards the bottom, but still on the side). Let all the old fluid drain out. Replace drain plug (some like to replace the washer with new). Put in new fluid until it starts to come out the fill hole. Replace fill plug. Make sure drain and fill plugs are torqued to 27 ft*lbs.

You can see the location of both the drain and fill plugs on the first page of this document.
They are the ones with the gaskets marked with black dots, meaning the gaskets should be replaced when removed.

It looks like my drain plug is at the bottom, pointing straight down. The fill plug is on the side, drivers side, a little bit up. No?

Does your's look like the one in the pdf?

If you have a 4wd it may look a little different, like this one:

    yep you got it!

Remove fill plug, remove drain plug, drain, replace drain plug, pump fluid into tranny until full, replace fill plug.

It also helps to have a fluid pump. Just pump fluid in until it starts coming out of the fill plug.

How many quarts should I buy for the 6-speed MT? Thanks.

Did this yesterday. Not a single photo in the manual, thanks a lot Haynes. When I busted off the fill plug, a cup or two of oil came chug-a-luggin' out. What am I thinkin? "Oh crap, wrong bolt." So I found this thread and confirmed I had the right one. Pumped about 2 quarts of the purple into it, and stopped worrying.

So what I'm saying is, thanks TW! :D

Now I just gotta figure out if some other fluid found its way into the tranny...

Mine actually did the same thing when I was changing mine for the first time the other day. I ended up threading the fill plug back in because it was spilling everywhere. I'm guessing it was just because the fluid was under pressure? I'm assuming there's no fluid level dipstick? I searched all over and couldn't find one in the engine bay and I don't have a owners manual. Anyways, I figured that since theres no dipstick or anything to relieve the pressure, that the original fluid was just under pressure so I didn't really worry about it.

I got the aluminum crush washers on Saturday from the dealership. Amsoil engine & gear oil, and oil filter in a box in the garage. I plan on doing the change at 3000 miles. That 5000 interval is kinda long especially in stop and go city traffic.

Youre gonna change the trans fluid every 3k miles? I hope you mean, just engine oil...which is still overkill.....

    I will try to help.

park on a level or as close to level surface... not sure how much it matters but it sounds good

place drain pan under drain plug area
    pull drain plug

cuss as drain pan was off by just a little

    glug glug glug

replace drain plug after oil has all glugged out

pull plug on driver's side of transmission

fill with fluid. the little pumps they sell at parts stores that attach to the gear oil jug or bottle work well but I make a mess no matter what. just try not to get gear oil in your hair... it's horrible

when fluid starts pouring back out of the fill hole, replace fill plug.

sorry, I have no pictures but if you really, really, REALLY need them...

Did mine about 2 months ago with RP. Sorry no pics but do have a diagram from dealer. I highlighted the fill & drain plug.
Pretty straight forward loosen fill plug 1st then take drain plug out, then take fill plug out to drain or you will get sprayed with gear oil (under pressure) mine was and yep it squirted. Torque down to 27 Ft-lbs for each plug. Takes 1.9 quarts. Fill plug is kinda a PITA with 4wd, front driveshaft runs in front of fill plug. Drain plug is on bottom. And yes they do have a breather that is pressed in on top. I've seen a write-up for moving it on a forum somewhere (huge PITA), maybe the ugly stepchild one ( FJ Cruiser) No dipstick.

Edit: Part number for crush gaskets are 90430-18008 $1.55 ea at dealer.

Much better, was having a slight grind going into 3rd, no longer an issue. Shift is much smoother using synthetic over factory fill which is what I had in mine. Very pleased with the result of just changing it.

If it's slight and not every shift, then it should help by switching over from dino. It did for me. I no longer have that grind and upshifting/downshifting is much smoother. I did learn not to shift it like my Chevelle 4 speed, I shift it a little slower and it's fine now.
