Colinb17's kinda sorta build thread

ideally i want to build a height adjustable shelf that will slide inside the trailer. that way i can store gear, tools, and spare parts on the bottom and sleep on the top. plans are to have a seperate power harness from the truck that will maintain a trailer mounted second battery. the battery will power an atv winch on the front of the trailer un case i need to detach to make it up something, and then winch the trailer up that obstacle back to the truck. the battery will also power interior lighting, and a small fan for sleeping. i'll put some nice watertight marine grade port holes in it too so i can open them for fresh air when sleeping in it.

damn, i typing that made me realize how much more work i have to do

Edit: i wouldn't mind a roof top tent on the truck though

gotta build a bed rack first though.

Very cool! I don't think I've seen your battery meters before. I also didn't know you got a picture of the pucker moment with the trailer of the cliff. Also, that skiing video is awesome.

 

I actualy just recently took out the battery meter when i redid some of my wiring. thinking about doing something a little cleaner.
i still use it though. hooked it up to the big power inverter when we were running the stereo, flood lights, and all kinds of other stuff. didn't want to kill the battery out camping


haha, i think i took the picture of the trailer off the cliff from your bed while you were hooking up the winch controller.

my brother an i have always joked about pulling him on skis behind the truck, and when we got 2, 3 foot snowstorms within 3 weeks, we figured it was a good time to try it

 

Sick build man, especially like the harbor freight trailer.

 

it sreved it's purpose as a HF trailer. made one trip with it stock and that was the end not much of the original trailer left. the whole frame has beend reinforced, tongue redone, lights busted up and replaced. and whole axle assembly thrown out. my friend pointed out that at this point i pretty much just paid for the VIN plate for registration.

Edit: the safety chains and leaf springs are still from harbour freight, but the chains are about to be replaced with something bigger and with clips instead of s-hooks. and the leaf springs aren't quite up to the extra weight of the cage and leased trailer, so they're about to go as well.

 

Haha yeah I can tell its not much a HF trailer anymore.. I have seen quite a few come through my shop and need to be welding up because the bolts come loose, also put a new tongue on everyone iv seen, haha.

 

yeah, i bent the tongue real quick on this one. i was wheeling it with about 1500 lbs of stuff in it. i knew that was a weak point, so i already had a new tongue designed and ready to be built.

it's sad, just by using a trailer jack mounted to one side of the tongue, the whole thing twisted. granted this was with the 1500lb load, but it was still pitiful. Jason got to see this first hand.

 

Yeah there not for any real use, pretty much like everything at HF, haha.

Iv made a few utility trailers and got homemade titles for $100, I just make them and sell them for some extra cash, havnt done any since trailer prices dropped but steel prices went up..

 

it actually wasn't a bad trailer in stock form. it's when you overload them that hey have issues, and it's very easy to surpass the 1200lb limit with a 4'x8' space

i would have done home made from the ground up if i didn't already have the hf one. it was just too easy to pass up though. it had plates, a vin, i had already wired it, and the frame and axle were all square and it tracked nicely. saved me a ton of time by only haveing to reinforce the frame vs build one and make sure it was aligned propperly. and time was short between a job and school already on my plate at the time.

 

Yeah it was pretty pathetic how we had to lift it up to put the jack back under it.

 

just got inside for the night. was planning on getting the sliders assembled and ready for the truck tomorrow, but it ended up taking longer than expected to install the safari snorkle on my friends's land rover. nice off road vehicle, but damn those things suck to work on. odly though, it has aluminum body panels.....never knew that. sure made cutting holes in it easy


anyways, got the slider legs fully welded to the frame plates, and the plate to leg gusset in place. tacked the legs to the sliders and the correct angle, so tomorrow i'll fully weld the legs to the sliders. probably weld them to the truck on friday.

 

I will have pictures of the whole process, but they're on my freind's camera, so i need to get those from him. the sliders are made very well. welds seem to have good penetration, and the design perfect for a tacoma.

 

Sliders are all welded up. welding them on tonight, just in time for wheeling next weekend.

 

fully welded on and painted at this point, i just haven't gotten a picture of that

 

whent wheeling at rausch creek over the weekend. great trails. beat up thetruck a little but it took it like a champ. here are a couple pictures and videos. i'll post more later.

















15 PSI and the ATs grabbed like MTs.....still can't wait to grab some MTs though
