New truck has Dunlop GrandTrek AT20 tires with wavy sidewalls...

New 2011 Tacoma prerunner double cab with the factory Dunlop GrandTrek AT20 tires on it. These tires have wavy sidewalls..

 

Mines are the same way!!! Heeeeeeeeeeelp is this something to worry about?

 

Mine are too. Same tire, same wave. But I don't have any issues with ride yet.

I had Continentals that had a huge bulge on the inside wall that I couldn't see and the tread split. THAT was scary looking. Caught that because the tire was turned....

 

Nope you are fine. Only is there is substantial wear would you wanna have it checked. I must have just been smooshed for a bit. It will disappear with time.

 

Great word smooshed, I thought I was the only that used it.

 

How much time, do you think? My truck is over a year old. My only worry is bulging sidewalls which can lead to separation, which can lead to split treads.

 

I'm at 47,000 miles or so on my AT20's that have been like that since day one. Zero problems.

 

It is normal.

It's a tire making process thing.

Their freakin' Goodyears. (If Goodyear didn't have sidewall problems...they wouldn't promote their Kevlar stuff)

 

I worked for a tire wholesaler for 3 years. These marks are made by the way the tires are stacked. They are laced in a zigzag pattern to save space and make the stack more stable. The side effect of this is indentations in the sides of tires with softer sidewalls (generally passenger tires). LT's and special order tires usually won't have these indents since they don't as lace well.

47K Miles !!! I'm hoping to pass state inspection tomorrow with just over 30K. These are the worst tires I've ever had.

 

I've seen alotta tires like that, I wouldn't worry.

 

I drive a lot of high speed (70+) highway miles. I'd say I probably only have 20,000 miles left in these tires. What do you do to kill yours so fast?

 

I killed mine after 8000 miles. Toyota should be sued for putting them on vehicles, that's how much I hated them.

I offered them to a playground to make swings out of and even they turned me down.

(Not really, I'm just trying to think of a strong enough analogy to describe my hatred of them)

 

Thats nothing , but there is 4-5 secret tracking devices in your tires that the feds put in to find you......Tracking People Moving Secretly...TPMS....

 

Ok. Passed state inspection. 32,650 miles on these POS tires.
I drive mostly highway and city. Occasionally a dirt road. My typical speeds are 65 to 70 mph on the highway. Around town it's generally 30 to 40 mph most places. I am a spirited driver but I don't spin the wheels unless its very wet and there's a grade where I'm starting off.
Rotate the tires/wheels every 5k miles because I want to get the most I can out of them.
I just talked to the tire guy at the dealer and he says everyone he talks to hates these Dunlops that came with the Tacoma. Most people replace them before 30K miles.
I'm leaning towards Wrangler SilentArmors since I don't do alot off paved surfaces but I require a reliable snow capable tire. I can not call into work because the weather is bad. I want an excellent all around tire and the SilentArmor looks cool and appears to meet my criteria. The DuraTracs look better but too aggressive for my driving. My son has them and he loves in the mud which is why he got them.

 

i havent had a problem with my dunlops (though i keep hearing terrible things about them)
my uncle said he couldnt even get 30k out of the tires before they had to be replaced.. im absolutely amazed to hear 47000 on those tires though!

and i have no "wave" in mine but ive seen it before.. nothing to freak out about.
