the low roads around here run about 60 so i might try driving them a bit more and see how it goes on the next tank.

I do. I took the old highway on our last fishing trip and took an extra 10-15 mins but ended up getting 30mpg because it was setup perfect. I was pumped

OP asked about real world MPG. NOT what his Grandma would get if she drove one! I have a 2011 AC 4X4 5spd and combo of city, freeway, off road and mountain driving is 21.5 before secondary air filter removal. I expect MPGs to increase, just did it let you know later.
    P.S. Freeway speeds are 70 to75 not 55 to65.

i have a 96 4x4 4cyl it has 31's on it and mix of city/highway i get around 22-23 mpgs and im just like you i always punch it everywhere especially getting on the highway pushing the 31's slows it down but i plan to re-gear sometime
also i usually go like 65-80 on the highway

Since he's in Oregon the interstate speed limit is 65, but he said highway which is max 55 in Oregon.

P.S. removing the secondary air filter will not increase your mpg.

my 08 reg. cab 4x4 5spd is getting 26mpg its all stock with just the secondary filter removed. its mostly to drive to work and some play. my average speed is about 45-50mph. this is great was driving my other truck (05 hemi ram lots of extras)for a while but it was killing me in gas.

Of course, after you're at speed (cruising) that doesn't apply, and that's why the 4-cyl. will beat the V-6 on long flatland trips. The V-6 will strain less on hills, but the larger displacement can make that a wash. It's generally hard to get around the fact that a smaller engine - if not too small - will get better MPG, especially when idling in city traffic.
