Got a camper top last week, used one whole tank of gas with it on and got 17.5mpg. Before with just a half rack I got 16.5mpg. I tried to keep everything under 60mph and all City driving. I'd say not bad.

truck is lifted and rims and tires too so pretty happy now

its probably becasue the topper is more streamlined. the half rack has absolutely no aerodynamics and would only create more air turbulence and increase drag?

Yeah, upon reading all the other threads I though I would lose mileage. But everything else on the truck stayed the same only difference was the camper. I only do city driving and try to keep rpm's below 2k and no fast take off's.

    But it improved....

Not sure a 1 mpg gain is proof enough that it's the camper, or that there is even a plus in mpg's.

The fact that he didn't lose mpg is already a plus. There's a video on YouTube with test done proving your mpg's
Increase. But it was done with a touneau cover

When I added my camper shell, my mileage also increased. I do a lot of highway driving during the summer. so highway I was getting ~17mpg before the shell. after the shell I was getting ~18.5. After a few fillups I got an ultragauge. So now monitoring my driving habits a little more I hope to see that increase a little more.

I would think you would loose MPG because of the extra weight

I get 300+ miles on a tank. I have gotten as much as 350 on road trips. i have a fiberglass cover on my bed and a 3in lift. Its an 02 double cab with the v6 and Auto, my buddy has the extra cab open bed with 4cyl and 5speed he gets 400 miles on a tank. we both use our trucks for work and drive 50/50 highway / city. both trucks have 265/70/16 and full loads always. we both own pool company's

My mileage doped down to 260 so i did a tune up and that brought it back up
I do use Royal Purple products on my truck

That's all you get per tank? I can go 375, a couple times over 400 miles. Sucks man.

I averaged 18mpg on dunlops; dropped to about 16.5mpg in BFG AT's. Dropped something like 30 miles/tank.

OP, is the gain in mpg enough to offset the cost of the shell? I mean, you're talking how many dozens of gallons before you offset the cost?

It could be that just keeping it under 60mph gave you the boost, that method always works.

I really doubt the camper top was purchased for the mpg boost, just may not have a penalty and may have improved, no need to offset the cost.

3" suspension lift (ToyTec coilovers and wheeler leafs), Yakima roof rack, ARE tonneau, K&N FIPK.
I have a tonneau cover on mine, but I saw a bigger MPG gain when I switched from all terrain tires to highway tires. Quieter, too.

I can get 22-23 mpg if I keep the speed0 between 60-65 and fill up around 350 miles on a tank of fuel.

I dont see how you guys can get in the 300mpg's with a lifted truck, stock maybe. Esp the guy claming 350-400mpg thats insane.

I paid $300 for a Leer camper, I mainly bought it for overnight fishing where setting up tents are limited.

The truck has goodyear Slient armor tires, more like a hwy/ crappy al.terr. tire

Any other tips you guys do for mpg's?

There is also a mythbuster's test saying it won't. I've also seen videos of unicorns stealing another unicorn's kidney. Youtube is not credible evidence.;) That said I wish I could get 17 around town, im at 13-14 :(
